You’re invited to the Jansen Art Center’s annual block party and benefit concert – Art in the Alley! The J will have live music, food trucks, a beer & wine garden, art activities, demonstrations, raffle and more. It all takes place behind the Jansen Art Center in Judson Alley in Lynden, Washington. This is a fun, outdoor dance party in celebration of the arts in our community.
Art in the Alley features a performance by the eight-piece Seattle band, The Chancellors. Fronted by the fabulous Shaina Shepperd, armed with horns and a tight rhythm section, The Chancellors perform a wide selection of Funk, R&B, Motown, Soul and Pop, putting on an energetic performance that is fun for everyone.
Celebrating the J’s six-year anniversary in Lynden, the event features activities and demonstrations from all of their art studios. “The Ceramics Studio will be selling work made from artists in our studio and have the pottery wheel on hand for demonstrations,” said Vin Quenneville, Executive Director. “Each studio will have something fun for guests to observe or participate in, showcasing our continued work in providing arts education and opportunities for artists in the community.”
Judith Gauthier, who oversees the Jewelry Studio at the J tells us that several jewelry artists will be on hand demonstrating soldering and metal texture techniques. They plan to have an interactive display allowing visitors to try their hand at some of the techniques students learn in the workshops offered at the J.
The Textiles Studio will offer spinning and weaving demonstrations and have information about the upcoming Fibers & Beyond Conference and Sale and there will be representation from the painting, dance and music studios as well. Quenneville is excited about the addition of the studio showcase at this year’s event and says each studio is planning something special to highlight their artists and programs.
Delicious food will be available through Hot Diggity Dog, Tacos El Tule and The Sugar Shack ice cream truck throughout the event. The J’s own Firehall Cafe will be offering Kulshan beer and local wines in the beer garden again this year.
Tickets for the event are $25 and benefit the Jansen Art Center. “Art in the Alley is our summer fundraiser,” says Quenneville. “The J is able to operate because of the support of our community. This event gives everyone a fun way to support the arts.” The event will also include a raffle and membership booth.
Tickets are available at the Jansen Art Center’s Gallery Shop or online at https://www.jansenartcenter.org/events/art-in-the-alley/.

Many of you have heard about the fast-moving and deadly fires that have been raging throughout California over the last several weeks. The Camp Fire in Northern California is the largest and most deadly fire California has ever seen. Thankfully, this fire is finally nearly contained, but not before taking the lives of more than 80 people, destroying more than 18,000 structures – most of them homes – and decimating hundreds of thousands of acres of beautiful California land. Hundreds of people are still missing.
There are more than 4,700 firefighters from stations from around the nation are helping to stop the spread of these terrible wildfires. Washington State Department of Natural Resources has sent more than 100 firefighters, and dozens of others have been sent from city and county stations around our state.
As I’ve watched this natural disaster unfold, I have been searching for a way to help in any way possible – maybe you have, too. Here is your chance!
Join us for a “Help for the Holidays” event! For your minimum donation of $50, I will be hosting Micro Sessions at a local fire department, featuring a small holiday scene onsite with a tufted green couch, and garland supplied by Pozie by Natalie. The station will have a fire truck on site for us to utilize for a bright and cheery photo backdrop. After you get your photos taken, local firefighters will be providing fun truck tours! All funds collected at this event go directly to the Bellingham/Whatcom County Firefighters Benevolent Foundation, where funds can be distributed in the most effective way to support those risking their lives to fight these fires. Collection of donations will be managed by the Bellingham / Whatcom County Firefighters Benevolent Foundation.

Pickford Film Center is excited for the fun to continue with Kid Pickford, a monthly family-friendly film series for kids at the Pickford for $1. Formally named Pickford Family Matinees, this series shows a classic family film each month on Saturdays at 1 pm. From an epic children’s quest spanning 50 years, rousing debates for the history books, some mysterious mythical cursed rabbits, gifted aspiring ballet stars, a quest to secure a stolen book, and a special winter in Moomin Valley, this year’s Kid Pickford slate is full of excitement and a joy to watch!
No matter if you’re 30 and want to see a classic favorite childhood film, have kids, want to host a birthday party, or simply want a relaxed and enjoyable Saturday afternoon, Kid Pickford is always a lot of fun. Bring your kids, bring friends or a date, and catch a classic Saturday afternoon movie.
Closing our Kid Pickford 2019 slate is Moomins and the Winter Wonderland (2017). The winter seems extraordinary in Moomin Valley, so Moomintroll decides to stay awake instead of having his typical winter slumber. Moomintroll discovers that strange creatures wander amidst the snowdrifts in the midwinter darkness, and all of the new hints imply that an eccentric guest is soon to arrive. This new guest is called Christmas, and an astounded Moomintroll learns to experience the true meaning of this wonderful holiday.

Cultural critic and author David Cotner visits Scarecrow Video for a signing of his book A History of Violence (1973). Its concept is simple: take the date in 1973 on which a violent film was first screened – and go beyond the film to see the world that exists outside the theatre. It’s a book that realizes that the line between life and cinema is as much a horizon as it is a terminator. A History of Violence (1973) takes you across that horizon to places in time you never even imagined existed. Because bombs don’t explode in only one direction.
Check out this Letterboxd list featuring some of the many films covered in the book: https://letterboxd.com/jaguar_ride/list/a-history-of-violence-1973
