Three Films by Hali Autumn with Live Score @ Karate Church

Hi!
I’m writing to put an event on your students radar–it’s an a/v event at a local underground venue, all ages, with sliding scale donation. More info:

“THREE FILMS BY HALI AUTUMN”

Three films constructed and re-worked by Hali Autumn, where neither imagery or sound take precedence. The films will be screened with a live score featuring; Ceremonial Abyss (Portland), Katrena Marie (Olympia), and Identity Theft (Bellingham). The curatorial idea is to not coordinate the imagery and music but to honor the synchronicity in the various unplanned approaches, combining to envelop the room into an immersive environment. One night only!

April 30th, 2022
at Karate Church
519 E Maple St., Bellingham, WA
9pm, sliding scale $7-2

Scarecrow Video Presents Zeitgeist ‘23! – The Overlooked Films of 2022 @ Scarecrow Video (virtual)
Jan 26 @ 7:00 pm

You know about last year’s blockbusters, you’ve heard about the critics’ award-winners, you’ve endured the Oscar buzz. In this free online Zeitgeist ‘23! talk, we pick a crop of 2022 films unfairly overlooked by the hypemeisters. Film critic Robert Horton promises a varied selection of titles, rumored to include at least one droll indie comedy, a superbly directed paranoid thriller by a first-time filmmaker, and a harrowing period piece on a hot-button topic. We’re also looking forward to hearing your nominations for overlooked movies, so be ready to make your case!

Experience Finland Through Film: Showcasing Unique Perspectives from the Land of a Thousand Lakes @ Firehouse Arts and Events Center

Finlandia Foundation Suomi Chapter presents an eclectic, three-day Festival of Finnish films. Throughout the first weekend of February 2023, the Finlandia Foundation Suomi Chapter will be presenting a showcase of films from Finland. Screened at the Firehouse Arts and Events Center in beautiful Fairhaven, this will be a weekend with something for everyone: from hard-to-find remastered classics, new takes on beloved characters, to current perspectives in present-day Finland.
The festival kicks off on Friday evening with a showing of the classic 2002 film, The Man Without a Past (original title Mies vailla menneisyyttä), by acclaimed director Aki Kaurismäki. Attendees are also invited to a talk by University of Washington Scandinavian Studies professor Andy Nestingen (details coming soon).
On Saturday we focus on a series of documentaries including the 2016 Tale of a Lake (Järven tarina) which takes a spellbinding journey through the seasons into the life of lakes and their connections with Finnish mythology. Later in the day, learn of the Sami people’s present-day struggle to maintain their indigenous culture and way of life with 2021’s Our Silent Struggle (Eatnameamet). Make sure you stick around for Any Day Now (Ensilumi), the 2020 exploration of an Iranian refugee family awaiting asylum in present-day Finland. Wrapping it up on Saturday evening is Aki Kaurismäki’s 1985 near-cult film Calamari Union, a hilariously absurd tale centered on fourteen Finnish men all named Frank.
Sunday brings us the beloved Moomins, a series of animated adventures that speak to the child in us all, followed by a special short film from our local Sister Cities chapter. We are presenting these two features free of charge. We follow with 2020’s Tove which brings to the big screen the creative life of Tove Jansson, the artist behind the internationally acclaimed Moomins. Experience the flavor of Finland’s southern neighbor Estonia with the inspiring 2015 film, The Fencer (Miekkailija), and step back into the past with The White Reindeer (Valkoinen peura), the 1952 fantasy/horror film and only Finnish film to win a Golden Globe.
You can find us on the web on Facebook and at https://www.ffsuomi.com/ where you can read more about the Film Festival and how to purchase tickets. All films will be in English or English subtitles.

Scarecrow Academy Presents Women in Trouble: Great Melodrama in Film @ Scarecrow Video (online)

Scarecrow Academy Presents Women in Trouble: Great Melodrama in Film @ Scarecrow Video (online)

Year Five of Scarecrow Academy brings an ambitious discussion series titled “Women in Trouble: Great Melodrama in Film,” an in-depth look at an often-derided, but frequently glorious genre sometimes called “women’s pictures.” In these ten weeks of free online conversations, we explore the way imaginative filmmakers have put women at the center of their hothouse creative universes. David Lynch refuses to describe his films, but has sometimes summed them up with the phrase “A Woman in Trouble.” In this series we’ll see how potent that situation can be.

Discussions are led by National Society of Film Critics member Robert Horton, author of the Seasoned Ticket column at the Scarecrow blog and Scarecrow’s “Historian-Programmer in Residence.” The Zoom sessions are free and open to all; there’s no homework, but we ask that you register online in advance. We’ll be meeting on Saturdays at 2 p.m., beginning March 4, 2023. Note: there will be no class on April 29.

Scarecrow Video Zeitgeist ‘23! – Anthological Sensibilities as Symbols of Community in Steven McQueen’s Small Axe @ Scarecrow Video (virtual)

When Small Axe premiered in 2020, many were quick to identify which of the individual films was best or most cinematic or most engaging. In this online conversation, we’ll discuss how the intricacies of the anthology’s aesthetic, structural and thematic ambitions only works when we think of it as a single piece where each piece works as a polyphonic part of a larger whole. This reading, where McQueen realizes the dramatic possibilities of an anthology, is central to fully inhabiting the searing message of communality and togetherness (despite differences) that is so important to the Jamaican proverb the series gets its name from. It is community, and not individual fragmentation, that assures success; and similarly it is the collectivism of the Windrush generation that forms the “small axe” that confronts the blindness of the British empire.

Scarecrow Video Zeitgeist ‘23! – Beyond HAL: Artificial Intelligence in Movies @ Scarecrow Video (virtual)

A lecture-discussion hosted by film critic Robert Horton

If you’re not anxious about artificial intelligence, are you even paying attention? Ever since the robot went hoochy-coochy in the sci-fi classic Metropolis, movies have explored the possibilities and consequences of what happens when we create something that might be smarter and quicker than we are. But do those hopes and worries say more about us than about technology? Given the current fretting about chatbots and AI hallucinations, it might be a good time to consider how movies have anticipated the AI revolution, from the paranoid computer of 2001: A Space Odyssey and the perfect boy of A.I. – Artificial Intelligence to the different personalities in Her and M3gan.

Scarecrow Video Presents Flying Saucer Cinema: The Thing from Another World (1951) @ Scarecrow Video (Virtual)

Scientists at an Arctic research station discover a spacecraft buried in the ice. Upon closer examination, they discover the frozen pilot. All hell breaks loose when they take him back to their station and he is accidentally thawed out! Based on the short story “Who Goes There?” by Joseph Campbell, this highly regarded classic by one of Hollywood’s greatest directors set the standard for decades. In 1982 it was remade by John Carpenter into a modern masterpiece – simply as The Thing – worthy of the original.

A History of Violence (1973) – Book signing with author David Cotner @ Scarecrow Video

Cultural critic and author David Cotner visits Scarecrow Video for a signing of his book A History of Violence (1973). Its concept is simple: take the date in 1973 on which a violent film was first screened – and go beyond the film to see the world that exists outside the theatre. It’s a book that realizes that the line between life and cinema is as much a horizon as it is a terminator. A History of Violence (1973) takes you across that horizon to places in time you never even imagined existed. Because bombs don’t explode in only one direction.

Check out this Letterboxd list featuring some of the many films covered in the book: https://letterboxd.com/jaguar_ride/list/a-history-of-violence-1973
