This workshop is open to Novice (not beginner) to experienced players of mainly acoustic string instruments (fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, bass, dulcimer, autoharp, etc). You will learn to play several songs and fiddle tunes with words (like Fortune), in the fun ensemble style of the Skillet Lickers and Charlie Poole, and we will work on how to play together to get that great Old Time Stringband sound! Time will be spent working on melody, chords and bass runs for guitars, and most importantly rhythm! Be ready to play and sing! A recording device (audio and video is fine) is HIGHLY recommended. Chocolate is always welcome! Janie, Pete and Kellie will have CD’s for sale too!
Janie, Pete and Kellie have been immersed in Old Time Music for over 100 years of combined experience playing old time music and learning from old recordings of such bands as Gid Tanner and his Skillet Lickers, Charlie Poole’s North Carolina Ramblers and other early 20th Century old time string bands.

“I want to take people to places they haven’t been,” says Jesse Cook, Juno-winning master guitarist. Known for his intoxicating fusion of world music, Cook has traveled the globe looking for sounds that resonate with him. “I like finding common ground, a space where music from around the world can come together.”
Refresh yourself from the hustle of the holidays, settle your mind, and get on a path toward balance for the new year. Join us for a carefully curated, extended Yin yoga class led by Kendall Tetsworth. You will be supported by live guitar played by local musician, Callum McSherry, and throughout class will be joined by Kendall on harmonium.
The workshop will begin with meditation and breathwork, then transition to a full Yin practice with an extended Savasana. Yin Yoga is a perfect balance to the Yang of our fast paced lives. This workshop will take us on an inner journey to cultivate mindfulness, an awareness of our internal responses and the fluctuations of the mind. A slow, meditative and intense practice, Yin yoga is practiced while seated or lying down. Postures are held in stillness for long holds (1-10 minutes). Because Yin targets the joints and connective tissues such as ligaments and fascia rather than muscles, the release from Yin is unlike that from other classes. A perfect compliment to dynamic forms of yoga, Yin promotes deep release and relaxation.
Chevalier de Saint-Georges | Symphony No. 2
Ralph Vaughan Williams |The Lark Ascending
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Symphony No. 29
We celebrate the opening of our 46th season welcoming our new Concertmaster, Dawn Posey!
Selected after a national search, Ms. Posey solos on “The Lark Ascending,” introduced by Shu-Ling Zhao, co-founder of the Sylvia Center for the Arts, and a community organizer and social justice advocate. This work is accompanied by a delightful, evocative visual presentation by our graphic designer, Audrey Negro, as well as members of our orchestra.
The afternoon also includes a work by a true polymath: a man who mastered everything he set his hands to, from fencing to opera, violinist to composer. Chevalier de Saint-Georges’ Symphony No. 2 is a testament to his prodigious skills and a delight to hear.
We close with Mozart’s Symphony No. 29, written by the 18-year-old Mozart after a trip to Vienna with his father, where he was exposed to the latest music of his friend and idol, Joseph Haydn, which many believe influenced the finale of this harmonically rich work.
These are reduced-capacity concerts with seating sold only in pairs.
For BSO events, all patrons must provide proof of vaccination for entry. A negative COVID test result will not be accepted as a substitute. Due to vaccination requirement, children under 12 cannot attend.
All programs are subject to change; please see the Bellingham Symphony website for detailed information.

We finish our 46th season with classical guitarist Daniel Bolshoy joining us for an afternoon of powerful, beautiful, and inspiring pieces by musical giants. If you enjoyed Bolshoy’s guitar mastery during last season’s At Home with Daniel & the BSO, you will love seeing and hearing him in person.
Bolshoy solos on Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Guitar Concerto, the orchestration of which was designed “to give more the appearance and the color of the orchestra than the weight,” according to the composer. Virtuoso Spanish classical guitarist Andrés Segovia used this work as a counterexample to the idea that a solo guitar cannot be heard over an orchestra.
We close with the magnificent Beethoven Symphony No. 5 and our thanks to our community for your support through these challenging times.

?Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola, and Orchestra
Gra?yna Bacewicz | Overture for Orchestra
?Ottorino Respighi | Pines of Rome
Join the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra as we close our 47th Season with Transported at the Mount Baker Theatre on Sunday, June 4th.
The concert will feature guest artists Dawn Posey (violin) and Amber Archibald-Sešek (viola) for a program that will transport audiences across the globe. Plus, audiences will get to hear MBT’s 1927 Wurlitzer 215 pipe organ!
To start, Dawn Posey and Amber Archibald-Sešek will join the orchestra for Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola, and Orchestra. Dawn Posey is a performer, coach, teacher, and lecturer who maintains an active and varied performing career. You can see her perform as Concertmaster of the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Concertmaster of the Northwest Sinfonietta. Praised as “a natural in every sense” by Arts Houston Magazine, Amber Archibald-Sešek’s solo career highlights include performances at the Gewandhaus with the Leipzig Academic Orchestra in Germany and with the Seattle Symphony.
Next, we present Gra?yna Bacewicz’s Overture for Orchestra. Bacewicz served as concertmaster of the Polish Radio Orchestra before the outbreak of WWII. Throughout the war, she continued to give concerts in secret. She wrote her Overture in 1943, during the German occupation of Poland. It was not performed until 1945. The BSO is honored to perform this work as part of the Harmony from Discord programmatic series, shining a light on music that transcends oppression.
Lastly, audiences will hear Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s Pines of Rome, a four movement Tone Poem and celebration of natural wonder, written in 1924. Part two of a trilogy of works about Rome, Pines of Rome depicts several scenes of pine trees throughout Rome, including at the Villa Borghese, near a catacomb, at the Janiculum, and along the Appian Way. This piece features a special guest—the Mount Baker Theatre’s 1927 organ, which will be played by Western Washington University’s Gabriel Mañalac.
“I’m excited to feature our own Dawn Posey for this concert alongside the incredible Amber Archibald-Sešek,” says Music Director Yaniv Attar. “For the Pines of Rome, we will have the largest orchestra on stage since before the pandemic, and it will be a special opportunity for audiences to hear the organ. I hope to see everyone in the audience for our final concert of this season!”
Audience members for Transported will be the first to learn about the BSO’s upcoming 48th Season and Maestro Yaniv Attar’s 10th Anniversary Season with the BSO. Early Bird Season Subscription Pricing will be available at the concert for ticket holders.
Tickets start at $15. A Pre-Concert Lecture about the program by Dr. Ryan Dudenbostel will take place at 2:15PM in the Walton Theatre. Doors open at 2PM and seating is limited, so please plan accordingly.
