Whatcom Literacy Council’s TRIVIA BEE @ Virtual or Menace Brewing or The Local Public House
Apr 28 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Whatcom Literacy Council's TRIVIA BEE @ Virtual or Menace Brewing or The Local Public House

The Whatcom Literacy Council will be hosting the 26th Annual TRIVIA BEE on Thursday, April 28th, 2022, from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.

Ryan Budds of TRIVIA WITH BUDDS is back to bring you a fun and interactive online trivia night akin to Jeopardy! Register your team of three ($75) here: https://whatcomliteracy.org/events or just watch for free.

Scotty VanDryver of KAFE Radio will host this exciting match of wits and brainpower. Teams compete in all four rounds in a range of topics. The winner goes home with the traveling “Totten Trophy.” Because it is a virtual ZOOM event participants can play from anywhere, with answers submitted via cell phone. Last year’s winning team “The Crabpots” had players from Bellingham, Alaska, and Baltimore.

For local residents who would like to meet in person The Local Public House (1427 Railroad Ave, Bellingham, WA) and Menace Brewing (2529 Meridian St, Bellingham, WA) will both be showing the event on big screens. Space is limited so come early to hold your spot; proof of vaccination and masks required.

Be sure to check out our online silent auction the week leading up to the Trivia Bee (April 23rd through April 30th).

All proceeds support the free adult literacy programs of the Whatcom Literacy Council.

Since 1983, the Whatcom Literacy Council has helped hundreds of adults in Whatcom County transform their lives by strengthening their literacy skills with free tutoring and small group classes. Proceeds from the event go directly to programs that help our neighbors here in Whatcom County build skills that help them get jobs and take care of their families.

Lean In @ Firehouse Arts and Events Center
Oct 20 @ 7:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Lean In @ Firehouse Arts and Events Center

“Lean in,” Kuntz and Company’s newest work, explores what it means to show up and lean into possibility. Creators and performers include Naquoia Bautista, Alona Christman, Vanessa Daines, Brooke Evans, Pam Kuntz, Ella Mahler, Caitlin Schafte, Angela Sebastian, and Kate Stevenson. (link to artist bios) Bellingham dance audiences may remember these artists from past Kuntz and Company work, Bellingham Repertory Dance Company performances, and/or WWU dance concerts. Many of them have performed together for years and have developed an intimate knowledge of each others’ tendencies and strengths, allowing for a wildly imaginative and wholly collaborative approach to the creation of this new work. While Kuntz is always collaborative in her approach to creating work, she typically identifies a theme (motherhood, body image, HIV/AIDS) and partners with non-trained community members to tell their stories surrounding that theme. This time Kuntz’s only collaborators are trained dancers and what they bring to the table: a wide range of personal stories wrapped inside of their movement truths and capabilities. This time the piece is about the dancers themselves, and what they bring to and bring out of each other. There is a chance that “Lean in” is about what it means to be a dancer at the age of 25, 35, 45 and 53 – Kuntz hasn’t quite hit the 55 mark – but that wasn’t the goal. It really is about showing up and seeing what can be discovered.

Trees of the PNW: A Wildcrafting Series with Northwest Natura
Jun 1 @ 3:00 pm – 7:30 pm
Trees of the PNW: A Wildcrafting Series with Northwest Natura

This series is designed for individuals at any skill level who are interested in learning more about trees and wildcrafting skills.

Each class will incorporate guided note-taking and hands-on experience that will familiarize you with various trees of the Pacific Northwest.

Overall, we will be moving at a slow pace during each outing as we focus on our surroundings and have mini lectures, and the second half of class will generally be stationary to engage in crafts and activities.

Expect some gentle to moderate hiking, and some kneeling or squatting.

Each class will build on the previous one. For more details, keep reading!

Day 1: An Evening at the Lake: Birch Bark Candles
Saturday June 1st, 2024

(Details on location will be sent to registered participants only).

This is an introductory class to common tree species and a wildcrafting course using several species of trees including Douglas-Fir, Paper Birch and Western Redcedar.

What to expect:

First Half: We will begin the series with an introduction to common trees and general concepts about tree adaptations to better appreciate the materials we’ll be working with in the second half of class.

Second Half: Each person will craft their own primitive candle using bark, resin, roots, and wood.
