This course is welcome to all, but will be best suited for beginner and intermediate photographers who have yet to fully master manual shooting with their DSLR or mirrorless cameras.
Scott Kranz (@scott_kranz) is a professional photographer, filmmaker, educator, and speaker who has used his creative vision and natural talents to become an industry leader, partnering with the world’s top outdoor and tech brands while shooting on all seven continents.
If you can’t make this specific date or time, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the class on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time after the program.

WNPS January Seminar: Floristics of the Goat Rocks Wilderness @ Sustainable Living Center
Jan 18 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Owls of the Pacific Northwest - ONLINE @ ONLINE

Join Paul Bannick for a program featuring video, sound, stories from the field and several dozen new images from his award-winning and best-selling bird book: Owl: A Year in the Lives of North American Owls.

Paul uses intimate yet dramatic images to follow owls through the course of one year and in their distinct habitats. Audiences will witness the four seasons on territory, as each stage in an owl’s life is chronicled through rare images: courtship, mating, and nesting in spring; fledging and feeding of young in summer; dispersal and gaining independence in fall; and, finally, winter’s migrations and competitions for food. His program shows how owls use the unique resources available to them in each habitat to face those challenges.

Tidal @ Firehouse Arts and Events Center
Oct 5 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Tidal @ Firehouse Arts and Events Center

Tidal – a dance piece about water … or a dance piece about influence and connection, inevitability and change

Tidal is a dance piece that emerged from a want to collaborate with really good artists: Helen Scholtz – photographer, Jessica Ardis – poet, Charles Halka – composer.
Scholtz’s images of water often look like abstract paintings. She captures texture, light, and movement in the natural world, creating images that awaken the senses and peak curiosity. Jessica’s poetry is blunt, succinct and somehow feels simple. There is an immediate relation, or an understanding of her work. She seems to mine our personal thoughts and feelings with her poetry, finding the words we can’t. Halka records sounds from the world and uses these sounds as the instruments in his work. For Tidal he uses recordings of the rushing water of the Nooksack River, the trickle of streams fed by melting snow at Heather Meadows, or the pouring rain in his backyard. The score is an orchestration of these natural sounds, at times heavily manipulated, to create the original sound score.

Eighteen dancers, ages 19-79, and Pam Kuntz dove into Scholtz’s photography and Ardis’ poetry. Memories and sensations filled their process as metaphors unfolded and the piece took shape. They created numerous “movement portraits” offering glimpses into how we live in our world – who we are, how we relate, and what our actions or reactions may mean. Some feel human, some feel environmental, some float perfectly between the two…the resistance and persistence of water carving a path and shaping our landscape lives inside the dynamic of human relations and interactions, the rhythm of tides and the unfolding of change through repetition over time exists in the human body.
Tidal is created by Jessica Ardis, Alona Christman, Cara Congelli, Tracy Dahlstedt, Vanessa Daines, Rebecca deGraw, Shoshanah Epstein, Dudley Evenson, Charles Halka, Karen Kao, Pam Kuntz, Susan Marriott, Samantha Martin, Marissa Moeri, Lucy Morse, Katy Mullen, Helen Scholtz, Angela Sebastian, and Cindy Whiston (Annie Molsberry, Bailey Kager, and Joyce Harvey-Morgan early contributors)

Koma Kulshan Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society
January Chapter Meeting

“Bees and Pollinators Through the Macro Lens”

Many people are unaware of the fascinating diversity of bees and other pollinators around the world. For example, in the state of Washington alone there are upwards of 700 species of native bees. To the naked eye, many of these organisms look like nothing more than a mundane house fly. Through the macro lens, however, a vastly different world is revealed. In this presentation, Aidan Hersh will showcase the beautiful bees and pollinators of Washington and beyond. Aidan Hersh is a macro photographer and native bee enthusiast living in Bellingham. He serves on the board of the Washington Native Bee Society and the steering committee of the Washington Bee Atlas. He hopes that his photography will spark interest in the too often forgotten yet vitally important world of bees and pollinators. His photos can be found on Instagram @photo.by.aidan.

May 19 @ 7:00 pm
Daniel Handler (AKA Lemony Snicket), And Then? And Then? What Else? @ New Prospect Theatre

Register today to hear some amazing tunes from Louis Ledford & Norah McLaughlin, and to get your hands on Daniel Handler’s brand new book before its release date!

Part memoir, part inspiration for aspiring writers, And Then? And Then? What Else? traces Daniel Handler’s sometimes challenging and often amusing path toward one of the most spectacularly successful writing careers of the twenty-first century. Declaring his love of strange literature, Baudelaire’s The Flowers of Evil in particular, Handler reflects on the life experiences—some of them deeply personal and revealed for the first time—and the cultural influences that shaped his writing, both under his own name and as Lemony Snicket, the lonely, beleaguered, somehow both cynical and romantic narrator of the beloved thirteen-volume saga of three unlucky orphans that became one of the best-selling series of all time. Inspiring, revelatory, and entertaining, And Then? And Then? What Else? is destined to become a classic of its genre, every bit as influential as Eudora Welty’s One Writer’s Beginnings or Stephen King’s On Writing have been on previous generations.

Daniel Handler is the author of seven novels, including Why We Broke Up, We Are Pirates, All The Dirty Parts and Bottle Grove. His new book on writing And Then? And Then? What Else? is forthcoming from Liverlight/W.W. Norton in 2024. As Lemony Snicket, he is responsible for numerous books for children, including the thirteen-volume A Series of Unfortunate Events, the four-volume All the Wrong Questions, and The Dark, which won the Charlotte Zolotow Award. Mr. Snicket’s first book for readers of all ages, Poison for Breakfast, was published by Liveright/W.W. Norton in 2021.

Handler has received commissions from the San Francisco Symphony, Berkeley Reperatory Theater and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and has collaborated with artist Maira Kalman on a series of books for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and with musicians Stephin Merritt (of the Magnetic Fields), Benjamin Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie), Colin Meloy (of the Decemberists) and Torquil Campbell (of Stars).

His books have sold more than 70 million copies and have been translated into 40 languages, and have been adapted for film, stage and television, including the recent adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events for which he was awarded both the Peabody and the Writers Guild of America awards.

He lives in San Francisco with the illustrator Lisa Brown, to whom he is married and with whom he has collaborated on several books and one son.

Louis Ledford and Norah McLaughlin specialize in harmony singing not unlike the Everly’s, Simon and Garfunkle, or Gram with Emmylou.

The songs are by Ledford, some of his friends as well as choice covers that you or your grandparents have never heard played quite like this before.

Louis Ledford has written, recorded and performed music for decades. The verdant fields of Virginia, the fragrant wards of New Orleans and most recently, the drizzly climes of Bellingham, WA have all been home.

Norah McLaughlin has been performing since she was a Whatcom County Kid in many wonderful bands including Kitty Kitty, Alamo Social Club and Yogoman Burning Band.

Doors open at 6:30.
