Patricia Missler in conversation with Elaina Ellis, Border Town Chica @ Village Books

Join us in welcoming local author Patricia Alarcón Missler as she shares Border Town Chica! All readers will glean something from Missler’s inspiring stories, and there’s something for everyone to relate to.

In Border Town Chica, A Memoir, Patricia Alarcón Missler paints colorful stories portraying a young girl growing up in a small south Texas border town. Readers see the author as a six-year-old picking out a special pastry, and as a young woman picking out a special boyfriend. A trip to the racetrack with Papi. Bandidos on the road. Two sisters on their own in Mexico City. Standing atop the Teotihuacán Pyramids. Fortunetellers in a cave bar, and more… Share the camaraderie and adventures of her familia and friends. Readers from diverse backgrounds will relate to these poignant stories, which transcend cultures. Inspiring, humorous, and insightful—at times intimately personal—Border Town Chica, A Memoir, breaks from the stereotype of the Mexican American experience.

After almost four decades of calling the island of Hawaii home, Patricia Alarcón Missler, and her husband, moved to Bellingham, WA in 2021, where she continues to unfold her creative journey. As an artist, she is well-known for large abstracts and also vibrant and whimsical watercolor paintings with collectors all over the world. As a writer, she published her first book in 2014 and a decade later is publishing a revised edition of her book now titled, Border Town Chica, A Memoir.

Elaina Ellis (she/her) is publisher and cofounder at Generous Press. She owns and operates A Trusted Reader, providing literary book editing services for brilliant writers of all stripes. For ten years she worked at the Pulitzer Prize-winning publishing house Copper Canyon Press where she served as editor. She is the author of Write About an Empty Birdcage, and has received support from Artist Trust, Mineral School, Vermont Studio Center, Jack Straw, Tent, 4Culture, and Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.

Eve Rickert and Andrea Zanin, More Than Two, Second Edition @ Village Books
Sep 16 @ 6:00 pm
Eve Rickert and Andrea Zanin, More Than Two, Second Edition @ Village Books

Join Eve Rickert and Andrea Zanin for a reading of their book, More Than Two, Second Edition. Masks are encouraged for this event.

“Can you love more than one person?” A lot of conversations about nonmonogamy start this way. When we discuss “opening” relationships, contemplate whether we want to be exclusive with our partners, or introduce multiple partners to friends and family, we are asking the people in our lives, and ourselves, to contend with this question.

The answer is obvious, and misleading. The love one feels in their heart and the love one expresses through daily acts of care and affection are both “love” in the true sense, but they have different requirements, present different options and produce different outcomes.

More Than Two can’t promise outcomes, but it is a guide to the paths—from anchor or nesting partnerships to relationship anarchy—possible within nonmonogamy. This long-awaited second edition bridges emerging theories on attachment and relationship diversity with authors Eve Rickert and Andrea Zanin’s insight and experience. The arcs of nonmonogamous partnerships bend towards complexity, introspection and compromise—or at least they can, if we work at it.

Eve Rickert is a Gen X, queer, solo polyamorous, relationship anarchist, neurodivergent cis woman living on unceded WSÁNEC and Lekwungen territory on the west coast of the place currently known as Canada. She is the curator of the More Than Two Essentials series and the nonmonogamy resource site morethantwo.ca, the founder and publisher of Thornapple Press, and the founder and mastermind of the science communications firm Talk Science to Me.

Andrea Zanin, MA, is a white, nonbinary, middle-aged queer writer who lives in Tkaronto (Toronto, Ontario), on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Andrea is the author of Post-Nonmonogamy and Beyond, part of the More Than Two Essentials series, and has written for the Globe and Mail, The Tyee, Bitch, Ms., Xtra, IN Magazine, Outlooks Magazine and the Montreal Mirror. Andrea blogs at sexgeek.wordpress.com, where they created the 10 Rules for Happy Nonmonogamy and coined the term “polynormativity.”
