11th Annual Stanwood-Camano Island SoapBox Derby

The 11th Annual Stanwood-Camano Island Soap Box Derby will debut its new Headquarters and Track at Arrowhead Ranch at this year’s race scheduled for Saturday, June 16, 2018. Randy and Marla Heagle, local derby partner hosts and Windermere Stanwood-Camano owners, paved the private soap box derby track which is situated on their 20-acre ranch located on the north end of Camano Island. With over 70 drivers participating in this year’s race, the public is encouraged to come out to cheer them on and enjoy the all the food and fun beginning at 9:00 a.m. on event day.

Ground broke on the new track, which runs straight from west to east with a slight decline, in late April 2018 with pavement poured mid-May 2018. Two-thousand tons of rock and 563 tons of asphalt later, the Arrowhead Ranch track is paved and ready.

“We’re so proud to introduce the Arrowhead Ranch race track and headquarters to our local community in time for this year’s Derby,” said Randy Heagle, owner of Arrowhead Ranch. “It’s going to open up countless opportunities for these kids to create memories with their families. The support we’ve received from the community throughout the building process has been a testament to the great people who call Stanwood and Camano Island their home.”

The local soapbox derby event incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills for all participating children ages 7-17 while also encouraging active mentorship and family collaboration throughout the derby car building process. Participating drivers can attend Drive Clinics at the local derby headquarters with their mentors or parents as well as Build Clinics held once a week leading up to race day.

In collaboration with Randy and Marla Heagle, several volunteers, and the Stanwood Camano Community Resources Foundation, the first annual Stanwood-Camano Island Soap Box Derby was held on Father’s Day weekend of 2008 in Stanwood as an opportunity to bring businesses, families and the community together. This first race brought in 24 drivers. The Stanwood-Camano Island Soap Box Derby Headquarters and Track were relocated to 615 Arrowhead Road on Camano Island in 2018.
