We define and examine the historical roots of imperialism. The first session explores the ancient concept of “divide and rule” and examine the most common reasons aggressor nations give for invading other countries.
The next three classes are case studies: The Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, the Russian conquest of the Caucasus “Muslim Lands” (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, etc.) and lastly the Chinese invasion of Tibet.

Michael Johnson holds a B.A. in history from Western Washington University and a master’s from California State University, Dominguez Hills. He has previously taught seven classes for ALL over the last decade.
