Fungi Foraging Basics: A Seminar for Mushroom Foragers with Northwest Natura @ My Garden Nursery Event Center

Are you ready for the coming mushroom season? Join Outdoor educator, naturalist, and experienced forager, Jazmen Yoder, for this comprehensive one-day workshop to get prepared! We’ll cover essential skills and knowledge to safely and responsibly forage for wild mushrooms in your area.

In this class you will learn:

Mushroom foraging basics: regulations, ethics, safety, and gear
Mushroom identification techniques for common edible and poisonous species
Mushroom ecology – understanding fungal life cycles, seasonality, and habitats
Tips for finding your own reliable mushroom foraging spots
Through lecture, demonstration, and hands-on activities you’ll gain confidence and know-how before you find yourself in the middle of the upcoming foraging season. We’ll also discuss preservation, cooking, and other ways to enjoy your fungal finds.

Whether you’re a beginner or have some foraging experience, this workshop will provide the fundamentals of responsible mushroom foraging to prepare you for a bountiful mushroom season. Join this special event to get ready to hunt those delicious wild fungi!

Sign up for one or multiple outings in October to forage for edible and medicinal mushrooms and learn about mushroom ecology and how to find target fungi.

There are 3 dates to choose from. Each course is from 12:00 to 4:30pm and take place in different locations.
To sign up for multiple dates you will need to purchase them individually in separate transactions:

Saturday October 5th
Sunday October 13th
Saturday October 26th
Locations will be in public forested areas around Whatcom County where foraging is legal without a permit. Precise details remain TBD as they are contingent on the fungi, but these trips will be no more than 1 hour outside of Bellingham. I will scout weekly to find the best locations and send you an email with location information 2-4 days before your event(s).

What to bring:

Dress for the weather
Snacks and water
Notepad and pen (optional)
Foraging basket
Hand lens (optional; I have some for sale (5/ea))
Registered individuals will receive location details, driving directions, weather forecast details and other info in an event-reminder email 2-4 days prior to the event. Please check your spam folder if you do not receive this email. Reach out if you do not find an email. There have been frequent issues with Gmail not delivering to Hotmail, Live, and MSN email addresses.

Fall Naturalist Series: Mycology & Outdoor Skills with Northwest Natura (Day 2) @ Whatcom County

This series is designed for individuals interested in having fun outdoors learning about PNW mushroom ecology, tree identification, and outdoor skills such as fire-making and foraging.

Each class will incorporate hands-on activities.

Expect some gentle to moderate hiking, and some kneeling or squatting.

Each class will build on the previous one. For more details, keep reading!

Day 2: Chanterelle-focus & Firecraft

Exploring biodiverse forests in search of edible and medicinal mushrooms. Fire-making skills. Outdoor Cooking with Chanterelles.

Mycology crash course (vocabulary, ecological roles)
Fungi foray – in search of chanterelles and other edible or medicinal fungi.
Fire-making
Cooking over an open flame with foraged fungi
