Sicily—mythic, mistreated, and monster-plagued—twice has enjoyed a Golden Age when she was pivotal to Western Civilization. Her rich history includes heroes from Ulysses to Archimedes to Garibaldi … and monsters from Cyclops to Mafia bosses.

Using images of Sicilian art and landscapes, this course investigates Sicily’s 3,000-year history, from its profound myths to the brilliance of the classical Greek and Arab-Norman periods, to its neglect under the Spanish, to the role of the Mafia, to the modern Sicily enjoyed by tourists.

We are pleased to have Dr. Kenning Zoom in with us from San Francisco.

Instructor: Douglas Kenning
