The Northwest Washington Fair is introducing motocross races for the first time.

The motocross races are different from previous motocross exhibitions and will feature local riders, plus some top professionals from Washington and British Columbia, according to Tim Koetje of the Mount Baker Motorcycle Club, which is organizing the races and building the course.

Races will include amateurs as young as 7-years-old who compete each week during the summer at Hannegan Speedway in Bellingham. But the invitation-only event also will feature pros on 450cc motorcycles competing for prize money. “These guys are going to leave nothing on the table,” Koetje said.

More than 60 drivers are expected to compete for prize money in this year’s demo derby, said Mike Scholten, president of the Whatcom Demo Derby Club. Competition classes include small pickups, large pickups, pre-1980 cars, post-1980 cars and small cars. Also, the “Jump Your Junk” event will return with payouts for the longest jump and best style.
