The WDRC seeks Whatcom County K-12 students to submit poems (30 lines or less) for the 2014 Peaceful Poetry Youth Contest. Youth are invited to explore themes relating to creative conflict resolution, including: resolving conflict, apologizing, listening, tolerance, building peace, respect, peer mediation, and anti-bullying. This contest highlights the WDRC Youth Program, designed to empower young people to resolve conflict without aggression and build healthy relationships. Through specialized trainings and mediation services, the WDRC Youth Program reached over 800 Whatcom County students in 2013.Contest winners will be recognized for their creativity and work promoting constructive and healthy conflict resolution at the Peace Builder Awards Gala and have the opportunity to read their poem on BTV, which will broadcast throughout the year. The school with the most submissions will also receive special recognition. For educators who are interested in submitting poems from a class or group, the WDRC has developed a 30-min curriculum that includes an overview of poetry styles, a vocab. brainstorm, and time for students to write and submit their poems. Educators are encouraged to contact youth@whatcomdrc.org for the free lesson plan.
