Thursday nights, the J invites you to enjoy free live music in the piano lounge from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The Firehall Cafe at the J offers their full menu of food and beverages until 9:00 p.m. Curated by local musician Victor Pruner, the Live Music in the Piano Lounge series is designed to bring a variety of local musicians to engage the community.

Nell received her undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Arts, from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her degree was in music education and piano performance. Graduate studies were done at Michigan State University. Her teaching experience spans 30 plus years, working with children as well as adults. She retired from East Lansing Public Schools in 1998, where she taught elementary music.

Nell was a member of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA), for several years while she was teaching. Orff Schulwerk is a way to teach and learn music, and is based on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance and keep a beat. Nell was also a member of the Music Teachers National Association, and active with the local chapter in Lynden. (LMTA)

Besides teaching music, she directed children and adult choirs in her church, and was in charge of music for Friendship, a program for mentally challenged adults. Nell enjoyed performing, and played for many church-related services, as well as teaching private piano to children and adults. Currently, Nell is playing part-time for church services and volunteering at the Christian Health Care Center where she teaches two music classes biweekly.
