For the First Friday Art Walk in October, Make.Shift Gallery is excited to present Aerial Divisions: Artworks by Ashley Olason and Hannah L. Rivers. Ashley Olason and Hannah L. Rivers are both Bellingham-based artists and alumni of Western Washington University’s BFA program. Through vividly textured multimedia paintings, Aerial Divisions is a study in borders and mapmaking. These abstract works source visuals from aerial views of naturally created land and society’s dark impact. They explore the idea that one cannot truly map the earth, for it is always changing, largely due to our imprints. Both artists use sewing as a method to manipulate. Their use of lines and various depths demonstrate the time, construction and intricacy of humanity’s alterations on the landscape.
