Join me for a quick exploration of Bellingham’s sandy intertidal zone during low tide during the Full Moon. We’ll venture out onto the exposed shoreline to discover and observe the diverse array of marine life that calls this habitat home.
While this impromptu adventure will be more casual than the rest of my classes, follow me closely on the shoreline and we’ll take the time to examine intertidal creatures’ physical adaptations and behaviors that allow them to survive the cycles of submersion and exposure. Beyond just ID, we’ll discuss broader ecological relationships and processes that shape the coastal habitat. You may also choose to wander on your own. This day is for you to explore as you please with a naturalist and other good company!
This is a unique opportunity to engage directly with the rich marine life of the Salish Sea. Participants should come prepared with sandals or sturdy waterproof shoes, and a sense of curiosity. We’ll spend around an hour exploring the shoreline and making fascinating discoveries together.
The walk to the shoreline is through the forest. It’s rated “easy” but does have at least one descent/ascent (out and back trail), but it is brief, and the trail is wide and well maintained.
