Illustrated Field Journaling

This workshop session is designed to strengthen your observation skills, practice and broaden your illustration skills, and spark reflection and creativity. We will move through a variety of modalities to achieve this, including analyzing fine art illustrations, creative writing, drawing, watercolor painting, collage and photography, as well as mindful movement and breathing – all practiced with short forays into the natural surroundings of the Diablo Lake neighborhood.

Our emphasis will be on not merely recording what we see in our journals, but reflecting on how it connects to something beyond itself, to something within ourselves. You are welcome to bring your own ongoing journals or start a new one, and also your favorite books of other natural history illustrators and poetry to share with others.??We will write, draw and observe intensely throughout our time together, utilize books from the Environmental Learning Center’s Wild Ginger Library to explore guide books, natural history volumes and art books to find inspiration for designing lovely journal pages. We will also use digital photography to help us with our drawing and painting.
Near the end of our time together, we will process how the new skills worked, where you were most inspired and share journal pages we’ve created over the weekend.
