The GEMS (Girls in engineering, math, and science) Fair is a free, family-friendly event showcasing groups around campus and Bellingham that have ties to the STEM community. Learn about careers in STEM fields, enjoy demonstrations and presentations throughout the day, and participate in an opportunity for local STEM Based programs and groups to inspire and encourage young women to explore different aspects of STEM.
In the past, we have had many exciting demonstrations and tablers. Last year, we learned about the Life of an Astronaut from local Astronaut, Wendy Lawrence. We also received a presentation from a Western Student involved in creating a solar window here on campus, and were able to give astronomy presentations in our own portable planetarium.
Many tablers also took part in the fair such as the ROV Club, Women in Physics, Wilson Engineering, The Foundry, and a group that showed students how to extract DNA from a strawberry. There was a wide array of STEM examples to treat students and families to a variety of activities.
