This is a hands-on forest-based class that incorporates multiple methods of learning including sample collection, guided notetaking, and several fun challenges and opportunities that will have you identifying, discussing, and categorizing various lichens we find in the forest.

What to expect:

Practical Identification Skills

Walk in the woods and learn practical techniques to identify various lichens.

Learn how to discern moss from lichen with a simple trick

Take a closer look (30x) and learn vocabulary for lichen structures.

Collect samples on your own then organize and label them with classmates around a warm fire.

Explore Names and Medicinal Uses

Familiarize yourself with the common and scientific names of several lichens

Discover history and cultural significance about certain species including traditional medicine and foraging practices.

Learn sustainable and ethical foraging methods for these sensitive organisms.
