Join Jazmen Yoder (Northwest Natura) & Madelaine Katz for an ecology crash course complete with captivating storytelling and science on Southern Resident and Transient Killer Whales, and the Salish Sea Bioregion.

In this course you will learn:

Salish Sea natural history, including human history and the interconnectedness of species on land and sea.

Orca symbolism and lore within the Coast Salish region

Morphological traits, behaviors, and social structures of Orcas

Salmon species basic life history and phenology

Ecological roles, impacts, and new facts about Southern Resident and Transient Killer Whales

To hear and discern different Orca vocalizations

How to ID individual orcas by their unique features

How to support Orca conservation efforts

Tips for whale watching (where to go, what to look for, how to ID individuals, and more).

This course will be co-led by Madelaine Katz, a nature educator and student of the Salish Sea, and Jazmen Yoder, outdoor educator, naturalist, and founder of Northwest Natura.

The entire class will take place indoors at the Chuckanut Center near Fairhaven in Whatcom County, WA. The Chuckanut Center is heated and has access to facilities including a bathroom, full kitchen, and drinking water.

Naturalist Hiking Classes with Northwest Natura (Class three) @ Whatcom/Skagit

Take a hike (or several!) with a naturalist and trained botanist to learn the names of PNW flora, fungi, fauna in various locations in Whatcom and Skagit County on Public Land and Private land.

NWN’s Naturalist Hiking Classes will focus on experiencing nature through slowing down to notice small details and discussing the “bigger picture”. Each class is an opportunity to exercise, get some fresh air, and nourish our minds. You can treat these classes as a mental health day! Come take a break and experience the outdoors with Northwest Natura.

This is the perfect class for hikers of any skill level, including beginners.

These field trips will be a wonderful gift to give yourself or a loved one this fall and winter. Each class will uplift, inspire thoughts about nature and our place within it. You will feel a sense of rejuvenation from these outings as you get outside and learn more about your home here in the coastal northwest.

In these classes:

Hike beautiful landscapes (expect elevation gain but with frequent breaks)

Learn how to identify mushrooms, plants including PNW trees, birds, and wildlife track and sign.

Learn the secrets of each species identified – ethnobotany, ecological role, folklore, medicinal uses, edibility/toxicity, and more

Make new friends.

Connect with nature.

Receive tips on foraging, medicine-making, cooking, and finding target species, and practice nature photography.
