Washington state freestyle and backstroke sprinter Ellary Boyd has announced her commitment to swim for the United States Merchant Marine Academy beginning with the 2020-2021 season.

A senior at Ferndale High School, Boyd maintains a 3.98 GPA, is a Student Council secretary, Honor Society treasurer, and peer mentor. She was a Washington State Senate page as well as an elected senator to Evergreen Girls State. She has been a team captain for her swim club, Bellingham Bay Swim Team, competed at ISCA Junior Nationals, USA Swimming Futures, Sectionals, and at Mel Zajac International in British Columbia. As a freshman, Boyd also swam for her high school, finishing 15th at the Washington Girls 3A State Swimming Championships.

“I am excited to accept the appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kingspoint, New York, and continuing my academic and swimming in a rigorous collegiate program. Boyd was a recipient of the prestigious Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship in Pennsylvania. Due to COVID 2019, the awards ceremony in Pennsylvania was cancelled, however her cash scholarship was still honored. https://www.gwcf.org/scholarship

She received her Congressional nomination to attend USMMA from U.S. Congresswoman Suzan DelBene. USMMA in Kings Point, New York, is one of five federally funded service academies and she will graduate in 2024 with a bachelor science degree, a Coast Guard license, and as an officer in the armed forces. 

The USMMA swims in Division III of the NCAA under the direction of Coach Sean Tedesco.
