Part of Bellingham SeaFeast!

The Bellingham Waterfront was a center of industrial activity for over 100 years. This left a legacy of toxic pollutants in the ground and sediment — like mercury, nickel, petroleum byproducts, and more — making most of the waterfront area inaccessible to the public (and toxic to salmon) ever since. Now, the community (you!) can help shape the waterfront’s future!

Since the industrial era ended with the closure of the Georgia-Pacific tissue mill in 2007, local organizations and agencies have worked to clean up the 12 toxic sites along Bellingham Bay. This walking tour gives you a chance to learn about several of the sites, the cleanup process, and how YOU can give your input about what you want to see the waterfront become.

Meet with RE Sources scientists, the City and Port of Bellingham, Dept. of Ecology, and the Working Waterfront Coalition and ask questions about redeveloping our waterfront to meet the whole community’s needs.
