Ever since the robot went hoochy-coochy in the sci-fi classic Metropolis, movies have explored the possibilities and consequences of what happens when we create something that might be smarter and quicker than we are. But do those hopes and worries say more about us than about technology? Given the current fretting about chatbots and AI hallucinations, it might be a good time to consider how movies have anticipated the AI revolution, from the paranoid computer of 2001: A Space Odyssey and the perfect boy of A.I. – Artificial Intelligence to the different personalities in Her and M3gan.
