An introduction to Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, followed by an exploration of the life and poetry of the great Sufi mystic and poet Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Rumi. The course explores the themes, subject matter and symbolism of Rumi’s poetry and makes comparisons with similar poetic expressions in Zen Buddhism and Daoism. This course includes a photographic tour of Rumi’s tomb and shrine located in Konya, Turkey, as well as readings of Rumi’s poetry, including musical recordings.
