Join the Advocates for a unique lecture at noon by Bellingham author Paul Owen Lewis, who will talk about Northwest Coast Native art and children’s literature. Lewis will tell the story of how he wrote and illustrated his classic picture book, Storm Boy, about a Haida boy’s undersea adventure with the killer whale people, which was the recipient of the prestigious 1996 American Book Award. Lewis will share “the story behind the story” about his special relationship with mentor Bill Holm, University of Washington Professor Emeritus of Art History, world-renowned author, teacher, and practitioner of Northwest Coast art.

Artist and author Paul Owen Lewis has produced several best-selling picture books across a wide variety of subjects that nevertheless express the same idea—that there’s always more to the story, and to ourselves, than we ever imagined. He travels around the country inspiring school children to discover the writer within, and lives on Lummi Island.
