Introduced by David Gray Hong Song-soo has created one of the most distinctive bodies of work in contemporary cinema. His productivity is at a level that one associates with the heyday of the studio system, making on average one film per year. His characters are often filmmakers, painters, or writers. Each film features them engaged in the ordinary business of life and in particular the relationships we form. Hong approaches these themes with a great deal of wit and humor; but this light touch conceals a considerable formal rigor. Right Now, Wrong Then is a good case in point: a film director goes to another city to present his work and meets someone there in whom he becomes romantically interested. The film examines how subtle variations in how we present ourselves to others can produce significant changes in our relationships with them – all while being enormously entertaining!
