This is one very fascinating family of birds! With a long association with humanity, they play large in our collective cultures. References such as a “Murder of Crows” and an “Unkindness of Ravens” sheds light on our fear of the “dark side,” inspiring positive spiritual creation myths as well. Ever wily, these intelligent animals have learned to co-exist and survive on this ever-evolving planet.

The course consists of two Zoom sessions plus an in-person field trip in which we explore these diverse North American species, looking at their bio-ecology, habitat associations, distribution and intriguing behaviors. Indulge your curiosity and join us for this class and/or an easy walking field trip to better understand our local, vociferous neighbor birds!

Field Trip Option: Thursday, March 16, 8 – 11 a.m.
Lake Padden Loop Trail (meet at the west parking lot, by the tennis courts)

Our exploration of Corvidae looks at both natural habitats as well as culturally modified places in search of this well-adapted avifauna. Be ready to carefully observe, document and interpret their behavioral ecology. Bring your binoculars, water, snacks and clothing suited for March weather conditions.

Instructor: David Drummond

David Drummond, Wildlife Biologist-Naturalist-Educator, has a continental and international interest in learning more about this stimulating avian family, as they provide clues to innovative survival strategies long mimicked by human cultures worldwide. With careful observation and thoughtful reflection, we too, can learn to adapt and co-habitat!
