Thanks to partnerships with Black Lives Matter Bellingham, Community to Community Development and Make.Shift Art Space, the Pickford Film Center presents the film Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Michel-Basquiat August 7, starting at 6:30 p.m.
This documentary follows street-art, neo-expressionist, American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat: famous for his political pieces critiquing colonialism, racism and class struggle. Woven with never before seen works of word and photography, the director Sara Driver also includes memorial from Basquiat’s close friends and artistic colleagues like Nan Goldin, James Nares and Luc Sante. Encapsulating pre-Aids, present-Ronald Reagan and art and real estate boom New York City is no easy feat, and Driver balances setting, narrative, history, art and political commentary exquisitely. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the iconic man: Jean-Michel Basquiat.
