Pickford Film Center is excited to announce the return of Rooftop Cinema — the outdoor summer film series hosted on top of the Parkade in downtown Bellingham. Mark you calendars for three Friday nights this summer: July 22, August 5 and August 19, and join us on the rooftop of the Parkade where festivities begin at 7:00 p.m. with a beer garden sponsored by Boundary Bay Brewery, live music and entertainment, food trucks, activities and more!

Each film begins at dusk, when the sun is finished setting and the sky is dark enough to see the film. The first in the lineup on Friday, July 22 is “The Last Waltz;” Martin Scorsese’s account of the final, lavish farewell show of The Band as they performed an impromptu all-nighter joined by some of their best friends including Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Dr. John and Joni Mitchell. There will be live music before the screening, honoring The Band and the music of the times.

Our second selection is the Academy Award winning film that follows the quirky Hoover family on an 800-mile journey in their yellow Volkswagen Van to a beauty pageant in California. You guessed it — “Little Miss Sunshine,” on Friday, August 5. Local groups Kulshan Kombis and Death by VW will be showcasing a collection of vintage and restored Volkswagens on the roof.

The series concludes with the beloved musical classic, “West Side Story” on Friday, August 19. Inspired by “Romeo and Juliet,” West Side Story tells the tale of star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria involved in a gang rivalry in New York City during the 1950s. Before the film starts we will have show tunes karaoke and everyone is welcome to participate!
