Accomplished Bellingham artist Trish Harding is leading four classes this spring through Whatcom Community College’s Community & Continuing Education program. Harding has more than 20 years of experience teaching through her studio, Studio UFO in downtown Bellingham. She was recently named the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival’s 2017 poster artist.
Landscape Painting: Using photographs of your choosing, participants will learn how to design composition, select a color system and plan a compelling mood. Discover the importance of thumbnail sketches to assist this process and how to move to the canvas with color, value and intensity to bring your painting to a successful conclusion. Personal focus and voice will be encouraged. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. Class meets Tuesdays, 1-4 p.m., April 11-May 9. Course fee is $189.
Dynamic Figure Drawing: Using clothed models from all walks of life, instructor Harding will teach the elements of gesture, shape, value and more to infuse your drawings with dynamism and drama. Work at your own pace as you learn to draw better than you ever thought possible. Class meets Fridays, 1-3:30 p.m., April 14-May 19. Course fee is $169.
Drawing the Figure in Motion: In the spirit of Toulouse Lautrec, who drew cancan dancers and circus performers while in the act of motion, Harding has designed specific drawing exercises that will challenge participants to capture movement and dynamics through gestural expression from life. Class meets Fridays, 1-3:30 p.m. May 26-June 16. Course fee is $159.
An Artist’s Business Guide: With many years’ experience showing her work and helping countless other artists show theirs, Harding will walk the class through the steps of the business side of art making. Geared toward all artists in any medium (2D and 3D), class covers selecting a cohesive body of work and writing a captivating artist statement and succinct resume. Also learn tips to ID, document and catalog work; explore venue options; and learn fiscal aspects including pricing guidelines, completing sales transactions, and more. Class meets Tuesdays, 10 a.m.-noon, May 16-30. Course fee is $79.
