THEATER ARTS GUILD PRODUCES THE SKAGIT VALLEY PREMIERE OF CRAIG LUCAS’ ROMANTIC COMEDY “PRELUDE TO A KISS”
MOUNT VERNON, WA-Theater Arts Guild (TAG) returns to the stage with the work of award-winning playwright Craig Lucas (Small Tragedy, 2004) and his 1990 play, Prelude to a Kiss. The successful On Broadway hit received numerous recognitions, including a Tony Award Nomination for Best Play, Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding New Play, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Prelude to a Kiss is a romantic comedy that begins with a chance encounter where Rita, a beautiful, bohemian, eccentric bartender, meets Peter, an attractive, bright, slightly geeky publisher. Despite her secret fear of the world and hesitancy to invest in joy, the two fall in love and marry. Then, at their wedding reception, another chance meeting between Rita and a frail Old Man completely alters the course of all three lives.
From the award-winning author of An American in Paris (2015), Light in the Piazza (2005), Amélie (2015), and Paradise Square (2022) comes a boy-meets-girl story with a surprising magical twist that tests the faith and bond of their love. Prelude to a Kiss is about how we show up in our lives and how we deal with fear and loss. Sweet and funny, romantic and poignant – the course of this play is a profound statement on the fragility of life and how every minute matters.
Director Angela Marinella is not only bringing the best of her decades-long theater career to the production, but she’s also integrating a new element into it with the addition of the marvelous NW jazz vocalist Joan Penney and her band. The trio will be on stage throughout the show, underscoring the scenes. Joan and her band will also be performing a 30-minute pre-show to set the mood for the drama to follow.
