Italy is the fourth most visited country in the world, yet most travelers get to experience only a few well-known, highly touristed spots. Whether your passion is history, art, mountains, food and wine or relaxing on magnificent beaches, we learn about incredible places that are off the tourist trail and how to travel to them sustainably and affordably. Among my favorites are Cuneo, in the Southwest corner of Piedmont, known for its stately porticoed streets, cycling, the Maritime Alps and rum-filled chocolates; and Giovinazzo, in Puglia, with its picture-perfect historic center and Romanesque Cathedral right on the Adriatic.

We’ll learn about the character of Italy’s regions, local experiences, things to do in nature and the cultural masterpieces that abound in every corner of the country.

Finally, we’ll delve into what it means to travel sustainably, transportation how-tos, lodging types and where and when to book in advance, with an emphasis on how COVID-19 has changed travel and travel planning.

To help you create a trip to Italy that’s right for you, with the instructor’s guidance you develop a travel plan and research highlights and options.

Instructor: Erica Mallin
As an educator in diverse communities for 30 years, Erica has had the opportunity to plan cross-cultural experiences, including international travel, that help build positive connections among participants. Inspired by these experiences, she launched a travel service, “Roads Less Traveled Italy,” that focuses on helping people connect with local cultures. Planning independent travel to Italy during the past two decades has given her a deep knowledge of the country.
