As a business owner in/resident of Whatcom County, perhaps you’ve noticed the growth in the number of African youth, immigrants, adoptees and international students in recent years. We hope you’re as excited to experience a more culturally diversified community as we are!

Our young friends from Africa have done an excellent job of embracing our community and culture, and yet they rarely have opportunities to share the unique and beautiful aspects of their cultures with us. They also have few role models of similar descent to look up to.

The organizers of Miss Africa Whatcom County aim to provide young African women with a platform to showcase their vibrant cultures while affording them opportunities to serve as positive African role models for younger generations.

The first annual Africa Whatcom County pageant, being held on June 9, 2017 at Western Washington University, is much more than a beauty pageant. It’s a multi-cultural event celebrating the beauty of each participant’s heritage while advancing the status of young African women in Whatcom County.

Through this event, our contestants will have opportunities to develop their leadership skills, gain greater self-esteem, while also raising awareness about humanitarian issues important to them.

Contestants like Aminata from Mali, will raise awareness about the very real threat of child marriage in her home country. Other contestants will highlight issues related to girl vaginal mutilation, rape, child abuse, children with disabilities and access to water.

For the sakes of young women like Hope Lambie, Aminata Dolo, Fatuma Musa, Destiny Otusanya, Esther Carlson and Nyambeka Elaine, we urge you to carefully consider support Miss Africa Whatcom County!
