Krista Rome, owner/operator of local organic seed company Resilient Seeds, will present the ins and outs of growing dry legumes and grains in our cool Pacific Northwest climate.
After four years of intensive variety trials and in her 10th year of growing these crops in Whatcom County, Krista has plenty of tips to share. From variety choice to planting dates, harvest tools to low-tech threshing and seed cleaning, Krista will send you on your way with confidence to grow your own year round protein-rich staple crops. After her approximately one hour presentation, together we will plant a few plots of favored dry legumes and grains at the Chuckanut Center gardens for gardeners to tend and learn from this summer.
*Krista will also bring seeds for sale (including local heirlooms that you won’t find elsewhere); you can order ahead of time to ensure availability at www.resilient-seeds.com.
Locally grown dry beans and grains are the building blocks for a low-impact, high protein diet, are easy to grow and store well long-term. Beans and grains can assist with building soil health when used in crop rotations. Dry beans and grains are also an easy introduction to backyard seed saving for personal and community-based food/seed security.
