Lloyd Herman traces the evolution of craft from the 19th century American Arts and Crafts movement through radical material and techniques changes in functional object-making, to present day where disciplines merge and function is replaced by purely expressive works. Lloyd was founding Director of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum where he worked for 20 years. The University of Washington Press called him ‘one of the foremost authorities on America’s contemporary craft movement’.
