Every Wednesday, the Jansen Art Center invites you to join us for a free live music performance in our Piano Lounge from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. Nell’s teaching experience spans 30+ years, working with children and adults. Nell was a member of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA), for several years while she was teaching. Nell was also a member of the Music Teachers National Association, and active with the local chapter in Lynden. Besides teaching music, she directed children and adult choirs in her church and was in charge of music for Friendship, a program for mentally challenged adults. Nell enjoyed performing and played for many church-related services, as well as teaching private piano to children and adults. Currently, Nell is playing part-time for church services and volunteering at the Christian Health Care Center where she teaches two music classes biweekly.
Paul Klein has been playing solo piano and in dance bands in the Bellingham area since 1976. He is currently leader and co-founder of The Atlantics, now in their 37th year. The Atlantics play clubs, private parties, benefits and accompany the Kulshan Chorus. Paul has traveled with the Chorus as the piano accompanist on tours to Romania, Costa Rica and Croatia.He has held down the piano chair every Tuesday at Boundary Bay Brewery for the past 16 years, where he sings and plays solo in the tap room. Paul plays and sings Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz and also plays classical, rags, and Boogie-Woogie. He is also a choir director for Men’s Chorus at 1st Congregational Church in Bellingham and has a teaching studio in Bellingham.

Each week we welcome a different talented local pianist, guitarist or small ensemble. Local music teacher, Karen Scholten, returns to the Piano Lounge at the Jansen Art Center. Scholten is a member of the Music Teachers National Association and the Washington State Music Association. She studied music history, music education, voice and concert choir at Seattle Pacific University. She teaches composition and piano to students of all ages in her studio in Everson.
Thursday nights, the J invites you to enjoy free live music in the piano lounge from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. The Firehall Cafe at the J offers their full menu of food and beverages until 9:00 PM. Curated by local musician Victor Pruner, the Live at the Piano Lounge series is designed to bring a variety of local musicians to engage the community. Terry Palmer is a guitarist and vocalist who was raised on radio. Terry grew up in San Diego and played in numerous bands throughout his time there. Palmer moved to Lynden, Washington in 2015 and has been performing solo are area venues. While versed in a number of styles, his passion is covering the Classic Rock hits of the 70’s. Terry always brings special guests to his performances at the Jansen Art Center, making each performance a fun-filled night of rock-n-roll.
Terhi M. Broersma is a multi-talented musician from Lynden, Washington, who earned a Master’s Degree in Music at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and worked full-time as a cantor-organist before moving to the United States.She is an exceptionally talented and versatile performer. As a soloist, she performs on organ, piano, bassoon, and accordion. Chamber music has always been close to her heart, either accompanying on piano, organ or cembalo or playing bassoon, her favorite instrument. She has been a member of Wind Ensemble in Finland and is at present a member of Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, Bellingham, WA.Terhi is also an accomplished and enthusiastic organizer of numerous music events and concerts both in Finland and in the United States. When it is time for lively Finnish music, she entertains her audience with singing and playing the accordion. She has a repertoire ranging from classical through contemporary to sing-a-longs.

Johanna Meenk’s early classical piano study in Lynden with Alva Humphreys was followed with various studies in music theories, piano pedagogy, and voice in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley. She has upon occasion accompanied choirs, as well as directed church choir in Tacoma. Johanna particularly enjoys sight-reading and piano accompaniment (soloist and/or chamber music).After working for about 10 years in the Bellevue area of Washington, Johanna is happy to be settled back in the northwest corner of Whatcom County. She with her husband enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending time with friends.

Join us, Friday, June 7th as we ride to protest our “indecent exposure” to fossil fuels, highlight bicyclist’s vulnerability, and redefine cultural narratives about body image.
Riders, and non-riding participants, can join the action with body painting, starting at 4 pm at a block party (focused on body positivity) in front of the Make.Shift Art Gallery, 306 Flora St. At 6 pm, the ride will embark from this location, lapping through downtown Bellingham. Live music follows the ride, as the Body Positivity Block Party continues.
Only ride “as bare as you dare” wearing as much, or as little, as feels comfortable! This event is both free and freeing, but donations are so appreciated!

elebrate the (safe) return of live music with joyful tunes from Free Harmony, a duo of long-time local talents Chuck Dingee and Sharon Mayson. Together they play an entertaining mix of originals and songs ranging from the 60s to present, by artists like Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Emmylou Harris, John Denver, Indigo Girls, The Police, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Bonnie Raitt, and many others. In March 2019, Free Harmony was opening act for the band America at the Tulalip and Legends Casinos in Washington state.
They have graciously accepted our offer to perform outside of our ‘Camp Cider’ Patio. There are only 7 tables available for this, so book fast. We are charging a small cover to pay the artists and pre-plan a fun evening.
