Night Photography at Artist Point @ Artist Point

In the grandeur of the North Cascades, moonless nights with clear skies offer fantastic opportunities to capture vivid images of the galaxy.

Join photographer Andy Porter on this evening expedition to capture images of the Milky Way on this moonless night. We’ll convene in Glacier for a short evening workshop on night photography. We’ll then continue our adventure up the Mount Baker Highway to Artist Point where Andy will guide us in capturing our nighttime images. With Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan contrasting against the night sky, you are sure to manifest a variety of creative evening images unique to the North Cascades landscape.

Andy is an award-winning photographer based in Skagit Valley. His North Cascades photographs have been featured in the Smithsonian Museum and the book The North Cascades: Finding Beauty and Renewal in the Wild Nearby, published in 2014 by The Mountaineers.

You will need to bring your own equipment, including a DSLR camera, wide-angle lens (preferably 14 to 24 mm), sturdy tripod and a cable release.

Go With the Flow: Waterfall and Stream Photography

Over 350 glaciers melt into the Skagit river, providing an abundance of cold, fast-flowing rivulets that cascade down the steep mountainsides in a dazzling array of creeks, streams and waterfalls. Join us for a one-day Field Excursion in North Cascades National Park to visit these diverse waterways and learn how to capture the essence of powerful cataracts with flawless composition and long exposure photography.

Our instructor Juan Aguilera is an avid photographer, teacher and self-described “Color nut”: “I believe that color is an independent language, with a specific grammar, spelling and intonation.” He will teach a wide range of topics, including

* How to use filters to capture dramatic light or create long-exposure effects
* Waiting for the right moment to shoot
* Aperture, shutter speed and ISO
* Discussions on getting the correct exposure
* How to fine tune exposure and use of histograms
* White balance settings for changing environments
* Learning how to create dynamic compositions
* How to use Polarizer & ND filters

You’ll leave this class with lots of new camera skills, refreshed inspiration and artistic images of flowing water for printing and framing at home!
