All the Rage: How American Politics Boiled Over @ Bellingham Yacht Club

All the Rage: How American Politics Boiled Over @ Bellingham Yacht Club

Bellingham City Club’s July program features Dr. Steven Stehr investigating the roots and consequences of the dysfunction that characterizes the current state of politics in America. The catered lunchtime presentation takes place on Wednesday, July 26 in person at the Bellingham Yacht Club. Doors open at 11:30 AM and the program starts at noon.
Tickets are available online through 6:00 pm, Sunday, July 23 at https://bhamcityclub.wildapricot.org/event-5336261/registration. Tickets may be available at the door for an increased price, space depending.

Name-calling, shouting matches, cutting off relatives, and even violence born of intense disagreements—there is bipartisan agreement that the current state of politics in the United States is troubling. How did we get here, and what can we, as a society and as individuals, do about it?

Dr. Stehr leads a conversation that asks, how did our political spaces become war zones? To what extent is the lack of civility and policy gridlock driven by long-term trends in American society? Is contemporary America somehow different than the way it was in the past? Was there ever a “golden age” of bipartisanship and civility in the United States?
Using historical examples and contemporary cases, Stehr shows audiences how the erosion of civil discourse harms democracy, and what can be done to combat it.

Steven Stehr (he/him) is the Sam Reed Distinguished Professor in Civic Education and Public Civility at Washington State University. He earned his PhD in political science from the University of California, Berkeley. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Research Council, National Academy of Science, and the Century Foundation. Stehr lives in Moscow, Idaho.

Two Worlds of Orcas: Exploring the Contrasts Between Southern Resident and Bigg’s Killer Whales in the Salish Sea @ Bellingham Yacht Club

At its Jan 24 luncheon program, Bellingham City Club is pleased to present Monika Wieland Shields, the co-founder and director of the Orca Behavior Institute (OBI), a non-profit based on San Juan Island, Washington whose mission is to inspire conservation of wild killer whales through non-invasive research, bold advocacy, and science-based education. The program follows a catered lunch beginning at 11:45 AM in the Bellingham Yacht Club, 2625 S Harbor Loop Dr. Bellingham.

Passionate outcries on behalf of the endangered Southern Resident Orcas have consistently dominated headlines for several years. Why do they struggle while the Bigg’s Orcas are thriving? Both are inhabitants of the Salish Sea. What causes the difference in the health of the two Killer Whale populations? By studying these two Salish Sea orca populations, we can learn a lot about the human impact on the world around us, and what it takes to successfully live in close proximity to the ocean’s apex predator.

Fishing in All the Usual and Accustomed Places: The Boldt Decision, Then and Now — 50 Years Later @ Bellingham Yacht Club

Bellingham City Club’s February program focuses on the 50th anniversary of the Boldt decision which upheld the rights of members of several Western Washington Indian tribes to fish with nets off reservation in accordance with terms of treaties signed in the 1850s. Tickets are now available for the Wednesday, February 28 program and catered lunch served at 11:45 am at the Bellingham Yacht Club, 2625 S Harbor Loop Dr, Bellingham . Early registration is highly recommended at https://bhamcityclub.wildapricot.org/event-5600278/registration. Space is limited.

“Fishing in All the Usual and Accustomed Places” were the 8 words in the 1855 Treaties with Washington Tribes that changed the fishing industry in the Northwest and continue to be consequential in decisions that have placed limits on heavy industry and development. The Boldt Decision, named after U.S. District Court Judge George Boldt, brought about far-reaching societal changes as it reinforced tribal sovereignty and began to remedy centuries of racial injustice.

Judge Boldt’s decision along with subsequent cases confirmed that the 20 treaty tribes had the right to harvest half of the catch in Puget Sound in all their traditional fishing areas, but perhaps even more importantly as the water wars heat up, tribes are entitled to “harvestable” fish and a habitat that produces them.

Our speakers will explain the history of this momentous decision and its effects that are still resonating in our land and water use planning today. They will explore the politics and challenges behind the Boldt decision and bring us up to date on the present state of the harvest.
