Business Over Breakfast @ Sustainable Connections
Oct 5 @ 8:00 am – 9:15 am

Sustainable Connections announces Business Over Breakfast, a new networking and education series for local businesses. The second instalment of this three-part series will take place on October 5, from 8-9:15 am at Sustainable Connections.

The October 5 session of Business Over Breakfast, Promote Yo Self! Advertising 101 & Speed Networking, will give local businesses the knowhow and tools they need to begin effectively promoting themselves. The morning will start with facilitated networking and end with a presentation on the topic at hand. There will also be a meet and greet with local advertisers in order to give small business owners the chance to see which print media outlets might best fit their needs. Participants will leave with tools such as a promotion checklist, press release template, a list of press contacts and online calendars, and top design tips for creating effective ads.

Don’t miss the last installment on November 2, where attendees will learn how to talk energy efficiency with their landlord or tenants. Utility bills can be one of the largest operating costs, and getting building owners or tenants to adopt energy efficiency projects and behaviors can have a big impact! Representatives from the Community Energy Challenge, our local experts at commercial buildings and energy efficiency, will be there to lead the session.

“Our goal is to help local businesses grow their social spheres and also increase their resilience and success,” said Becca Weathers, Sustainable Connections Membership Coordinator and Think Local First Manager. “This is a great opportunity to network with other business leaders in our community and take home tools that will benefit your business that same day – come for the networking and leave with experience!”

Space is limited, so be sure to RSVP soon. Business Over Breakfast is free for Sustainable Connections members and $10 for non-members. Local breakfast, coffee, and tea is provided and attendees are encouraged to bring their own reusable mug as well as business cards or flyers they would like to share.

Bellingham Premiere of Rogue Elements, presented by REI @ Mt. Baker Theatre
Sep 26 @ 6:30 pm
Bellingham Premiere of Rogue Elements, presented by REI @ Mt. Baker Theatre | Bellingham | Washington | United States

Bellingham, get ready! On Tuesday, September 26, TGR is returning to the Mount Baker Theatre for the winter kick-off party of the year. Join us for a one-night only premiere of our new feature length ski and snowboard film, Rogue Elements, presented by REI.

There will be a ton of prizes from our partners at REI, Atomic, Volkl, CEP, TGR and more, plus everyone in attendance will have a shot at the tour grand prizes. Don’t miss your chance to see Rogue Elements on the big screen. Plus, all attendees get a 2-for-1 lift ticket to Stevens Pass, valid Monday-Thursday from Opening Day 2017 through December 16, or January 2 through April 4, 2018. And, you can enter to win one of the tour grand prizes, including one of THREE trips – to Jackson Hole, Crested Butte or Ski City (Salt Lake), plus REI gift cards to gear up from a huge selection of skis, boots, jackets and more.

About the film: In the winter of 2017, the magnitude of winter’s force was on full display. Telephone pole-snapping storms pounded the Wyoming landscape. Regions to the west, recently left arid and forgotten, were gifted with unprecedented accumulation. Blizzards in Europe buried towns in an instant before disappearing just as fast, leaving the lucky few who were there to wonder if it even happened. A Bolivian expedition found grace above 18,000 feet before the elements went rogue and the humans reluctantly heeded warnings from above.

Join the TGR team as they embark on an adventure filled with fury and glory, and witness the unimaginable. Rogue Elements, presented by REI, features Angel Collinson, Jeremy Jones, Ian McIntosh, Elyse Saugstad, Tim Durtschi, Dash Longe, Nick McNutt, Hadley Hammer, Johnny Collinson, Thayne Rich, Sammy Carlson, Dane Tudor, Clayton Villa, Cam Riley, Sean Jordan, Griffin Post, Sam Smoothy and Sammy Luebke.

Know Your Renters Rights @ Localgroup Studio
Oct 21 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Know Your Renters Rights @ Localgroup Studio | Bellingham | Washington | United States

Renters unite! A majority of Bellingham rents (54 percent) — the city can’t function without tenants. Yet housing is increasingly unaffordable and precarious for working-class renters. Tenant-landlord law is confusing and weighted against us. This event seeks to empower renters with a tenant rights training, followed by a discussion of current shortcomings of tenant protections and how we can wield our collective power to change it. We will also share the resources and opportunities BTU provides to the community. There will be social time for attendees to get to know each other.

Housing Week Panel @ Limelight Cinema
Oct 21 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Housing Week Panel @ Limelight Cinema | Bellingham | Washington | United States

There are multiple levels of government and dozens of local agencies that are working to address the housing affordability crisis and rising homelessness. Understanding how they all fit together can be quite confusing! This is your chance to “look under the hood” of some of the programs in our community, using examples highlighted in three short films. Come to learn who does what related to affordable housing and homelessness in our area – and bring your burning questions for those who are working on these issues every day. The popcorn is on us!

Session panelists will include:

Samya Lutz – Housing & Services Program Manager, City of Bellingham
Barbara Johnson-Vinna – Housing Specialist, Whatcom County Health Department
Greg Winter – Executive Director, Opportunity Council
Joanne LaTuchie – Vice President of Real Estate Development, Mercy Housing Northwest
Rita Jo Case – Associate Director of Housing – Snohomish County, Catholic Community Services

Space is limited, so reserve your spot today.

Learning from the Vienna Model Exhibition, Zurich and Other Advanced Places @ Eleanor Apartments | Bellingham | Washington | United States

The most civilized cities in the world, like Vienna and Zurich, show how wonderfully advanced a social housing system can be and how far we can aspire to go, aiming for a time when there are enough homes and affordable choices for everyone who finds themselves in our community. Stories, facts and visuals from other places can help expand our comprehension of what is possible, what might work here and how fast we might improve on the good work that’s already happening in our region.
