Outdoor Skills: Fire & Breadmaking @ Forested Lands near Welcome, WA

Come out and enjoy an afternoon learning survival firelighting and how to bake bread over a campfire with Northwest Natura!

This course is designed to be highly engaging with hands-on activities. Here’s what you can expect from this class:

Opportunities with Guidance on the following:

-Coaching and practicing firelighting with a ferro rod.
-Independent foraging; locating materials for fire making.
-Craft your own fire without a lighter using foraged materials.

-Learn Jazmen’s outdoor bread recipe to share with your friends and family.
-Preparing and baking (and eating!) at camp.

Northwest Natura is a small Bellingham business owned by naturalist, Jazmen Yoder. She directs but maintains a hands-off approach with this class so you can successfully make a fire in damp conditions and bake outdoors on your own again without guidance.

At every NWN class there is a sense of community. Expect bonding, laughter, and total joy in the woods!

Bushcraft Crash Course: Survival Basics @ Forested Lands near Welcome, WA

This course will take place on State Lands in Whatcom County off Highway 542 near Deming, WA. Details on location will be provided in an email 3-4 days prior to the event.

Bushcraft is a term used to describe the practice of skills which aid in living outdoors. Here are the skills we will cover in this crash course:

Survival Basics
-Rule of Threes
– Fire making without a lighter
– Water sources and sanitation
– Shelter – temporary shelter construction
– Food – winter wild foods
– Knot-tying and lashing basics.
– Tarp deployment
– Cooking tripod
– Tools of the trade and practice using them.
– Knife and ax skills
– Containers
– First aid kits

We will practice all of these skills together in this full-day course. Knives and ferro rods provided for the day.

A list of basic things to bring to this course will be provided in an email 3-4 days before the event.

Feel free to bring your own outdoor tools such as a knife, ax, fire starter, tarp, containers (pots, water bottles), paracord, first aid kit, etc. so you can practice with your kit and/or I can answer any questions about your gear and help you troubleshoot issues you may have with them.

Shifting Gears, Bellingham’s non-profit creating welcoming recreational experiences for all women in the outdoors, is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated 6th Annual Wild Women Week, starting February 29th and running through March 9th. In partnership with more local organizations and businesses than ever before, this ten-day extravaganza will provide opportunities for women to engage in many of Bellingham’s incredible outdoor (and some indoor) activities, while fostering strong ties between the women participating and a sense of empowerment in the outdoors.

“Wild Women Week has been Shifting Gears’ celebration of International Women’s Day for the past six years,” said Krysy Keller, Shifting Gears Executive Director. “As a day that brings women together all over the world, this week is our way of making Bellingham’s incredible recreational activities even more approachable and accessible for women in our community, while also forming strong bonds between the women who participate.”

Shifting Gears is also excited to reintroduce the ‘Dirt to Indulgence’ Party on the last day of festivities. Absent from the past three Wild Women Weeks due to the pandemic, the party serves as a place to celebrate, connect and reflect on all the ways participants spent the week adventuring in the community. During the event, Shifting Gears will also name their ‘Wild Woman of the Year’. This individual, having been nominated by their community, is someone who has overcome barriers and inspired others this past year with their outstanding spirit. The party will be hosted the evening of March 9th at Lost Giants Cider Company, and will offer food, drinks and dancing in a safe place, where women are encouraged to be their wild selves.

Wild Women Week features a wide array of activities and provides opportunities for women to discover something about Bellingham, be it a new local business, or a new hobby. Events include bike rides through partners like Transition Bikes, the Bike Ranch, Stones Throw and Wonder Brewing, paddling through the Community Boating Center, Line Dancing at Boots Tavern, Self Compassion and Sexual Empowerment workshops through Wink Wink, Open Water Swimming, Yoga, Bowling, and many more. All levels are welcome at every event, and required equipment will be provided at most.

“With so many women-owned businesses partnering, and so many women leading these events, Wild Women Week is also a celebration of these incredible assets to our community,” said Aubrey McNeil, Shifting Gears Board Member. “We had the most participation ever from local businesses this year, something that shows us just how excited Bellingham is to engage its wild women. “Wild Women Week has been Shifting Gears’ celebration of International Women’s Day for the past six years,” said Krysy Keller, Shifting Gears Executive Director. “As a day that brings women together all over the world, this week is our way of making Bellingham’s incredible recreational activities even more approachable and accessible for women in our community, while also forming strong bonds between the women who participate.”

Shifting Gears is also excited to reintroduce the ‘Dirt to Indulgence’ Party on the last day of festivities. Absent from the past three Wild Women Weeks due to the pandemic, the party serves as a place to celebrate, connect and reflect on all the ways participants spent the week adventuring in the community. During the event, Shifting Gears will also name their ‘Wild Woman of the Year’. This individual, having been nominated by their community, is someone who has overcome barriers and inspired others this past year with their outstanding spirit. The party will be hosted the evening of March 9th at Lost Giants Cider Company, and will offer food, drinks and dancing in a safe place, where women are encouraged to be their wild selves.

Wild Women Week features a wide array of activities and provides opportunities for women to discover something about Bellingham, be it a new local business, or a new hobby. Events include bike rides through partners like Transition Bikes, the Bike Ranch, Stones Throw and Wonder Brewing, paddling through the Community Boating Center, Line Dancing at Boots Tavern, Self Compassion and Sexual Empowerment workshops through Wink Wink, Open Water Swimming, Yoga, Bowling, and many more. All levels are welcome at every event, and required equipment will be provided at most.

Join us Saturday for music in the taproom from The Devillies (11 am), and The House Wrens (1 pm), with Irish dancers performing throughout the day. Pogues tribute band, Bottle of Smoke will be performing in the beer garden with The Moving Hats from 6-9 pm ($10 cover).

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with us at the Bellingham St. Patrick’s Day Parade! Join us on Sunday, March 17th in Downtown Bellingham for our annual parade celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Starting at Waypoint Park and making its way through Downtown, the parade ends on Railroad Ave outside Depot Market Square!

Bellingham’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a great chance to connect with the community! The parade is in honor of the Bellingham Police & Fire Departments, and it’s a great chance to celebrate all the businesses, groups, schools, and nonprofits that make our town what it is.

Everyone is invited to participate in the parade, as long as your group is family-friendly and non-political. Whether you decide to march in the parade or watch from the sidewalk, we welcome all to join us for this community-wide event and help us celebrate all the ways we can make Bellingham greener!

Come enjoy an exciting day of Roller Derby! @ Whatcom Community College Pavilion

We kick off the event as Whatcom County’s Junior roller derby league, The Subdued City Rollers, takes on Southside Alliance in a full-contact level 3 bout. Doors open at 2:00PM with the first whistle at 3:00PM. This is sure to be an exciting and hard-hitting match up.

Right after the juniors is a Bellingham Roller Betties double header. The first bout will see The Cog Blockers take on visiting team Dockyard Derby Dames at 5:00pm, followed by Tough Love competing against F.L.A.S.H. in the second bout of the night. Don’t miss out on the excitement as these teams battle it out on the track!

We have a concessions stand selling chips, candy and soda, and a beer garden serving Boundary Bay beer and wine, and Lost Giants cider.
