Reflecting on the end of our fiscal year (May 31), we find that the word that comes to mind isn’t “data” or “growth” — it’s connection. Every child clothed through Operation School Bell and every senior we’ve visited is a testament to the unique bond we share with this community.
Our Thrift Store has had an incredible year, but its success isn’t measured just by the busy Wednesday mornings or the “best of” awards we’ve been honored to receive. It’s measured by the stories within its walls.
The Power of a Donation: Every pre-loved item donated by a neighbor directly funds our local programs, ensuring that 100% of our raised funds stay right here where they are needed most.
A Gathering Place: Our volunteers have transformed the Shop into more than a retail space — it’s a community hub where friendships are built and lives are touched.
For years, we have been proud to serve as part of a national network. However, the most vital part of our identity has always been our local autonomy – the fact we know our neighbors’ needs better than anyone else.
Our Bellingham Assistance League, a cornerstone of local community support for decades, is proud to announce its transition to an independent, locally governed nonprofit organization. Effective June 1, 2026, the organization will officially conclude its affiliation with the National Assistance League and begin operating under its new name: Action League of Bellingham.
This strategic move allows the organization to focus 100% of its resources, fundraising, and decision-making on the specific needs of Whatcom County. By becoming independent, Action League of Bellingham ensures every dollar raised remains in the community to support its signature programs, including the vital school-readiness initiatives and the operation of our beloved thrift shop.
This is a milestone moment for our volunteers and the neighbors we serve. While we are grateful for our history with the national organization, moving forward to an independent entity gives us the flexibility to respond more quickly to local challenges. Our name has changed to Action League, but our mission remains the same.
However, the most vital part of our identity has always been our local autonomy — the fact that we know our neighbors’ needs better than anyone else.
As we look toward the new year, we find ourselves reflecting on how to best serve those needs. We are leaning more than ever into our own expertise and the strength of our dedicated member volunteers. We are excited to continue this journey with you, evolving in ways that allow us to be even more responsive and focused on our community’s specific future.
None of this – the successful programs or the thriving shop – happens without you. Whether you donated a bag of clothes, found a treasure in our aisles, or spent your time volunteering, you are the protagonist of our story.
We’re so grateful to be part of this community, and we can’t wait to share what’s next as we continue to grow side-by-side.
