Effective Friday, March 13, Bellingham Food Bank will only distribute pre-packed boxes of groceries. This shift in operations from the usual shopping model follows the lead of food banks in King County as we all learn to manage COVID-19 and its spread.

“Customer choice and the ability to shop will be lost with this strategy, but we will still give people access to the food they need,” shares Executive Director Mike Cohen. “Slowing the rate of how many people get sick is critical. In addition to disinfecting practices and frequent hand-washing, ‘social distancing’ is a vital intervention. Sadly, our food bank is very crowded when we are open and social distancing is near impossible to do successfully.”

Bellingham Food Bank remains committed to helping families get nourishing food they need and deserve, especially during a time of crisis. Distributions will see pre-packed boxes of the usual milk, eggs, protein, produce and nonperishables as well as options for menstrual support products, baby food and diapers. Visitors may come as needed during regular hours of distribution and standard twice per week visit limitations will not be tracked.

While many aspects of our operations remain dynamic and uncertain, community support remains a constant. “In challenging times we are so fortunate to hear from our community wondering ‘how can I help?’” Right now, keeping yourself informed and healthy is top priority. After that, our food bank has the most opportunity for success with monetary donations. The food and nonfood supplies currently needed are changing based on our responses to new developments related to this pandemic. Monetary support gives us the ability to be nimble and creative.

“By donating online, you and we can keep our distance but still remain close—in a virtual sense.”
