Once again this Halloween, at Downtown Bellingham Partnership’s Trick-or-Treat event, a team of two Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) Transit Operators welcomed trick-or-treaters to what looked from the outside like a regular bus. What they found inside was another world, where glow-in-the-dark colors, creatures, and textures led to an iridescent Black Hole.

Cathy H. and Kay V. have been creating WTA’s Haunted Buses as a team for the past eight years. Their favorite part of the process is seeing how kids react to the finished product. But the brainstorming, and bouncing ideas off each other, comes as a close second.

Collaboration is key. And so is enrolling helpers, including Kay’s husband and granddaughters, who have volunteered their labor on every bus.

Many of their best ideas for Haunted Buses come in the days after Halloween, once the current year’s staging and decorations have been removed and put away. In other words, no one—not even Cathy and Kay—can predict what we’ll see in 2020!
