Daniel James Brown’s The Boys in the Boat, details the story of the University of Washington crew team that won gold during the 1936 Olympics. As an adjunct to reading the book, come to the Pickford Film Center and experience Leni Riefenstahl’s film “Olympia,” made in 1938, which documents the 1936 Olympics and set precedents for ways in which sports were filmed and edited. Riefenstahl’s films were, of course, complicated by her association with Nazism, a subject that won’t be ignored during this evening’s discussion between parts 1 and 2, facilitated by Whatcom READS! scholar and WWU history professor Kevin Leonard. Tickets to reserve your seat at this FREE screening are available at the Pickford Film Center box office. Part 1 shows at 6:30 p.m., part 2 shows at 9:30 p.m.
