“Some of the most exquisite music coming out of Africa today … Sublime & peaceful.” ~ Zina Saro-Wiwa, BBC

The African Strings Project celebrates the astonishing beauty and diversity of Africa’s immense contribution to human expression, art and culture. Prepare to be impressed and enlightened by three masters on guitars, lutes, lyres, bows and more: Derek Gripper from South Africa, Jaja Bashengezi from the Congo and Kinobe from Uganda will perform original, contemporary and traditional material from the mother continent.

African Music Lecture

Saturday, February 10 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets: FREE

Explore African music through the insights of Kinobe, Jaja Bashengezi and Derek Gripper. Gain a full understanding of music in Africa, the significance/role of music and musicians in the past and present African communities. Derek Gripper will discuss the meeting point of two different traditions – the written western classical music and the oral West African griots.

This program is made possible by the Washington State Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
