Firefly Classics Concert: Jeffrey Gilliam @ Jansen Art Center
Apr 22 @ 7:30 pm
Firefly Classics Concert: Jeffrey Gilliam @ Jansen Art Center | Lynden | Washington | United States

The Jansen Art Center is pleased to present Firefly Classics: Jeffrey Gilliam on Saturday, April 22 at 7:30pm. Firefly Classics is a concert series at the J celebrating the best in classical music. Jeffrey Gilliam is a pianist, currently teaching at Western Washington University.

Prior to joining the piano faculty at WWU in 1992, Gilliam taught at The Juilliard School, The University of Michigan School of Music, and at The International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland. He has performed and taught all over the world, including guest university teaching positions in Thailand and South Africa. He has received two Fulbright awards.

For the recital at the Jansen Art Center, Gilliam tells us that he chose works that he believed the audience would enjoy while showing off the magnificent Schimmel grand piano in the resonant space.

“For example, I’ve chosen Debussy’s Engulfed Cathedral prelude, because a lot of students and teachers know and love it, and because it will really fill the space. Some of my pieces will sound really big at the J, so be forewarned if you sit in the front rows!,” he added.

Gilliam continues his discussion of this upcoming performance:

“A topic of current interest for Western’s piano students and faculty is the piano transcription.I’m including two transcriptions: the Bach violin Chaconne, arranged for piano by Busoni; and Wagner’s Liebestod from his opera “Tristan and Isolde”, arranged by Franz Liszt.Wagner’s “Tristan” influenced everyone that followed him, including the young Austrian composer Alban Berg in his very first published work, his Sonata Opus 1. I’ve chosen Scriabin’s “Vers la flamme” because, like Wagner’s “Tristan”, it features a weird and enigmatic sound throughout. For me the Scriabin piece, (means “Towards the Flame”) functions as a Big Bang Theory for piano. My second half is devoted to Brahms’ epic Handel Variations and Fugue, one of the cornerstone pieces of the romantic piano repertory.”

Gilliam has recorded with violinists Yehudi Menuhin, Alberto Lysy, and Ruggerio Ricci for the EMI, Dinemec Classics, and Opus 111 labels.

Originally from Akron, Ohio, he studied piano with Cécile Genhart at The Eastman School of Music. He also studied collaborative piano with Martin Katz and Margo Garrett. In addition to teaching piano and collaborative piano at Western, he is Artistic Director of Western’s Sanford-Hill Piano Series.

Beyond his own success as a musician, Gilliam’s students have gone on to distinguished piano performance programs at Stony Brook, New England Conservatory, Rice University, and Eastman.

Tickets for this event are $25 and are available at the Jansen Art Center Gallery Shop and online at www.jansenartcenter.org. Firefly Classics is supported by the Certified Public Accounts firm, Telganhof & Oagten.

Stories Deployed 2019 @ Wilson Library

Western Washington University’s English Department and Veterans Services, The Associated Students Veterans Outreach Center, and the Veteran Community have come together with the Red Badge Project to present their annual Stories Deployed event for 2019. On May 9th 2019 at 4:00 pm-6:00 PM in the Wilson Library Reading Room on WWU’s campus, join local veterans as they use their skills in creative writing to share their personal and raw experiences within the military in a spoken performance. This event serves as an outlet for participating veterans from Western’s Campus and the Bellingham community to share their stories in a cathartic manner, while simultaneously giving their civilian peers an insight into the complicated and profound experience of military service. Americans should have some understanding of what it truly means to serve their country, and what better way to truly welcome home their service-members than listening to their story.

Stories Deployed joins the national storytelling movement within the veteran community, including the Red Badge Project, The Telling Project, and the Veterans Writing Project, to give voice to those who have served. The event is free and open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Those veterans who are interested in experimenting with the medium of creative writing or participating in Stories Deployed can attend our writing workshops on April 13th and April 20th 2019, at the Bellingham VFW Post 1585 at 4pm-7pm. In our workshops, veterans will learn how to generate a story and be given feedback on their work. No writing or storytelling experience is necessary to attend, and attendance of the writing workshops does not mean a veteran is forced to participate in the Stories Deployed event in May. Childcare services will be offered for all events to veterans with children so they can participate.

Please contact Janice Heebsh, the Veterans Community Coordinator at as.veterans@wwu.edu for further information.

Connect & Learn Downtown Bellinghamb @ Social Hall at First Baptist Church

All are welcome, and participation is free!

A light meal will be served at 5:30pm, and the program will begin around 6:00pm.

The event will be facilitated using social learning methods to help us share and learn in an equitable way. Participants will animate the conversation with their questions, challenges and dreams for Bellingham. This approach generates relationship-building, new knowledge, and increased empathy, and reveals opportunities for collaboration.

To get a sense of the spirit we’re bringing to this event (and hope that you will bring too), watch this 1-minute video from the Learning Together Trainings the CEF Coalition offered this winter:
