Join Ed Lowe and Pam Gould on their journey through the Indonesian archipelago aboard a traditional phinisi sailing schooner as we visit some of the most wild and remote places on earth. We sail to Komodo to observe the infamous Komodo Dragon in the wild. On the Spice Islands we visit villages that have not received western visitors since 1947. And we travel to Raja Amat, which boasts the largest marine biodiversity on the planet including Red Bird of Paradise, bat caves, prehistoric rock petroglyphs, uninhabited tropical islands and yes, there will be dragons.

The Camino de Santiago’s French Way extends over 400 miles from St Jean Pied de Port to its conclusion at Santiago de Compostela. This historic route first crosses the Pyrenees and then traverses the gorgeous landscape of northern Spain. It has been traveled by pilgrims for hundreds of years. Our presentation chronicles the progress of four good friends as they work their way across this remarkable landscape and, bit-by-bit, chart progress toward a completed Camino. If you’ve walked the Camino, hope to walk the Camino or just like to walk to the mailbox, please join us for slides and discussion. Presented by Leaf Schumann, Louise Granger, Sharon Digby and Karen Ssebanakitta.

Patrick McGinty, a local Bellingham adventurer, took the challenge in the Spring of 2019 to bike across the Southern Tier of the United States solo. It was a challenging, exciting, and eye-opening experience. In McGinty’s presentation, he will highlight the route he took, some of the challenges he encountered, what he ate, where he slept, how much it cost, what he learned, and what most surprised him. He will present his experience in a dynamic, fun way with photos and stories from the road. He has also chronicled his journey in his book, A Bike Trip Across America: A 3,411-mile Journey of Discovery.

Porter will share all he knows about camera settings, locations for great night sky imaging, and any other tips he can think of. He is currently a photography teacher at Burlington-Edison High School and teaches adult photography classes through Bellingham Parks and Rec, Burlington Parks and Rec, and the North Cascades Institute. Rick Lawler and his wife, Alice, have been to China several times on guided tours. In March of 2019, just before the pandemic, they decided to change things up and explore China on their own. Rick was fortunate that Alice speaks, reads, and writes Chinese and knows the culture. Their adventures included the world’s longest cable car, the world’s highest external elevator, and the world’s longest over-sea bridge. Join them for an unusual and exhilarating view of China that few Westerners have an opportunity to see.

She and her husband, anthropologist Dr. John Barker, will also share photos of their adventures in Bhutan’s extraordinary cultural and geographic landscapes.
