Scarecrow Video Zeitgeist ‘23! – Starring Lena Horne @ Scarecrow Video (virtual)

A lecture-discussion hosted by author Valerie C. Gilbert

Eighty years ago, the illustrious Lena Horne made her appearance in the first two all-black musicals to come out of mainstream Hollywood, Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather. However, unlike her roles in these two historic pictures, Lena Horne had no speaking part in most of her films, but rather appeared as a segregated specialty musical act. In this session, we’ll explore these two films and consider why, despite (or perhaps because of) the limitations placed on her film career, Lena Horne was a movie star like no other.

Admission is free. Registration is required: bit.ly/svzeitgeist
