Big Beatles Sing-Along Jam @ Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship
Nov 17 @ 2:00 pm
Big Beatles Sing-Along Jam @ Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship | Bellingham | Washington | United States

Bring your voices, and even your guitars and ukes if you want. Join the “Seatles” who lead the huge Beatles sing-along at the Seattle FolkLife Festival every year. (Peter Langston, Robin McGillveray, Mark Ouellette, & John Reagan.) I will personally welcome you in my favorite Sergeant Pepper regalia! You can even wear your own.

The Beatles music shines in our collective memories. In this era, Beatles songs link people of all ages. Singing their songs in a crowd feels a lot like old Pete Seeger hootenannies; we’ll sing To as well as With each other and dance in the aisles. It is SO fun! I don’t care if you “sing well” – I would love you to come join us!

Proceeds at the door go to the Bellingham Folk Festival. I would like each one of you to reach out and invite everyone you can think of, of all ages! I want this thing packed! Bring your friends, kids, grandkids, parents, grandparents, neighbors, favorite grocery store clerk… everybody!

Whatcom Symphony presents Harmony from Discord with Cellist Clive Greensmith @ Mount Baker Theatre
Nov 18 @ 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Whatcom Symphony presents Harmony from Discord with Cellist Clive Greensmith @ Mount Baker Theatre | Bellingham | Washington | United States

In the Symphony’s next installment of our Harmony from Discord series, we shine a light on powerful music that transcends oppression. We are joined by cellist Clive Greensmith, formerly of the Tokyo String Quartet, who will present the American premiere of composer and cellist Pál Hermann’s Cello Concerto as realized by Fabio Conti. We follow with Mahler’s iconic Totenfeier (Funeral Rites), and the concert finishes with Viktor Ullmann’s Variations and Fugue on a Hebrew Theme, which Ullmann composed from inside the Theresienstadt (Terezín) Concentration Camp. This concert is sure to be a testament to the incredible fortitude of the human spirit! A pre-concert lecture about the repertoire by Dr. Ryan Dudenbostel starts at 2:15. Performance on Sunday, November 18 at 3:00pm at the Mount Baker Theatre (104 N. Commercial St.).

Wednesday Lunchtime Music: Nell Veenstra @ Jansen Art Center
Nov 21 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Thursday nights, the J invites you to enjoy free live music in the piano lounge from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The Firehall Cafe at the J offers their full menu of food and beverages until 9:00 p.m. Curated by local musician Victor Pruner, the Live Music in the Piano Lounge series is designed to bring a variety of local musicians to engage the community.

Nell received her undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Arts, from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her degree was in music education and piano performance. Graduate studies were done at Michigan State University. Her teaching experience spans 30 plus years, working with children as well as adults. She retired from East Lansing Public Schools in 1998, where she taught elementary music.

Nell was a member of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA), for several years while she was teaching. Orff Schulwerk is a way to teach and learn music, and is based on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance and keep a beat. Nell was also a member of the Music Teachers National Association, and active with the local chapter in Lynden. (LMTA)

Besides teaching music, she directed children and adult choirs in her church, and was in charge of music for Friendship, a program for mentally challenged adults. Nell enjoyed performing, and played for many church-related services, as well as teaching private piano to children and adults. Currently, Nell is playing part-time for church services and volunteering at the Christian Health Care Center where she teaches two music classes biweekly.

Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox @ Mount Baker Theatre | Bellingham | Washington | United States

Discover a new way to enjoy your favorite tunes as viral internet sensation Postmodern Jukebox jazzes up modern hits with retro flair. The multi-talented collective reimagines contemporary pop, rock and R&B hits in the style of various yesteryears, from swing to doo-wop, ragtime to Motown—or, as creator Scott Bradlee himself puts it, “pop music in a time machine.”

Stepping from the screen to the stage, PMJ’s live show is a Roaring ’20s party that would make the Great Gatsby proud, mixed with a swinging ’60s night with the Rat Pack, spiced up with a little Motor City soul and some classic sock hop rockin’ that gets you twisting or twerking the night away, depending on what era your mood is in.
