Indivisible Bellingham is holding the Your Vote Counts! Block Party, a county-wide effort to couple fun with voter awareness ahead of this year’s midterm elections. It is free to the public.
“Expect an afternoon of music, performers, food, family/kids activities, dancing, beer and fun for everyone,” Doug Brown, co-leader of the group said. “We are inviting ALL candidates to table and mix with the crowds, although there will be no political speeches. This is a non-partisan event but we invite and welcome groups to do their own advocacy while tabling.”
“Party-goers will have a chance to register or correct their addresses online,” said Peach Tarver, co-leader. “We will also have paper forms in four languages for those who need them, plus voting information on all 50 states and Puerto Rico for friends and family.”
There are currently 12 co-sponsors, with more on the way. Boundary Bay Brewery will set up a beer garden and Homes Now! will be showing off its newly repurposed shower truck. Radio station KMRE-FM (102.3) will do live remote broadcasts from the event.
Event coordinator Kevin Leja said, “We have a great line-up of performers and musicians, including the Lummi Blackhawk Dancers, Bob Fossil, Heroes, Sehome Acapella Group and Robert Sarazin Blake. We’ll also be hearing from Lucy Barefoot of the Secretary of State’s Elections Division office, and Noah Purcell, Washington state Solicitor General. We especially want to engage underrepresented communities and young voters. Some of our strongest supporters are high school students, and it will be orientation weekend at WWU.” Leja is available for more information and media interviews.
Indivisible Bellingham is a nonpartisan, nonprofit group united by the principles of fairness, inclusion, tolerance and a just society for all, through non-violent civic engagement, political involvement and consistent pressure on elected officials.
