She’ll also include stories from the book (hilarious, sad, candid, surprising…) about the children who sat in the Chair, what happened when children sat in the Chair, and how it could work in a classroom or home setting.

Co-Parenting Communication Workshop @ Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center

The Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center (WDRC) is offering a Co-Parenting Communication Workshop. This course is designed to help divorced, separated, and never married parents build skills to manage emotions, be heard, communicate effectively, and reduce co-parenting conflicts. Participants will learn how to identify stresses and triggers, appropriately manage anger, and express needs in an assertive, interest-based manner. The workshop will introduce participants to the root of conflict, physiological responses to conflict, conflict resolution strategies, and effective communication techniques – empowering individuals to deal with conflict in their lives safely and productively. The cost of the training is $10 and pre-registration is required. The Co-Parenting Communication Workshop will be offered again on Saturday, September 19th from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Circle of Security Parenting Series @ WCLS Everson Library

Circle of Security Parenting is a facilitated group conversation for parents to be able to discuss and reflect on how they are creating a secure relationship with their child/children. We will be meeting for 10 weeks. The conversation builds upon itself, so we ask everyone to commit to coming each week. You will become more conscious of observing and understanding your children’s natural rhythms and emotional needs, while having the chance to connect with and learn from other families.

RECURRENCE: This 10 week class meets on the following dates:

Who?

Youth & Young Adults: Talk with peers about how to change our social environment and reduce stress anxiety and depression for us. Hear stories of battles with mental well-being and talk about changing perspective. Finally, get to share with adults and help them make changes to their daily behavior towards forming more welcoming environments at home, school and in the community.

Adults, Parents and Youth Serving Professionals: Engage with Dr. Christopher McCurry, community wellness and prevention representatives, and with one another in conversations to shape how we can increase wellbeing and decrease stress, anxiety and depression for our youth, families and communities.

Distinct tracks for youth and young adults and parents and adults who serve youth in community settings will envision environments that promote wellness and compassion and identify skills and next steps for bringing hope to action. Youth and young adults will share their vision for a world in which they will thrive.

Angus McLane, M.A. Angus is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who earned a MA in Counseling Psychology in 1986 from Gonzaga University. He has worked in community mental health, private practice and state service and has extensive experience in child and adolescent therapy, adolescent sex offender treatment, family systems and juvenile corrections. He has trained in multiple evidence-based practices such as Functional Family Therapy, Brief Solution-Based Therapy, Incredible Years, Motivational Interviewing and Project Safecare. Angus is currently a licensed trainer for Triple P: Positive Parenting Program and he travels extensively to train agency staff in this model. He has taught the class, Helping Children Through Family Changes, for the WDRC since 1993.

Deborah Forgays, PhD. Deborah has a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Vermont and is currently a Professor in Psychology at Western Washington University. Her teaching and research have focused on issues important to children, adolescents and families. She obtained her community and family mediation certifications through the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center in Bellingham.

Arise Well Counseling Services, L.L.C. will be at the Barre Pointe studio conducting dance and movement classes geared toward children who may have difficulty communicating or expressing their feelings. This is a therapeutic form of dance and movement for kids and their parent/caregiver.

Hidden In Plain Sight: A Mount Baker Community All Ages Event @ Mount Baker High School

Join us to learn about current trends, how to recognize common warning signs and how to talk to youth about these important issues.

Adolescence is the age of opportunity. Plenty of healthy and unhealthy risk taking options present themselves. Indicators of teen drug use, mental health concerns, unhealthy relationships, human trafficking and other risk factors can be hidden in plain sight, but easy for parents and other adults to miss.

Walk Through: 4 – 5:45pm
Participants will walk through a mock teen bedroom to attempt to identify 70+ items.
18+ Presentation: 6-8pm
Explanation of items related to risky behavior, local youth trends in substance use and mental health, and tools for adults to help youth navigate the teen years.
Youth Listening Sessions: 6-8pm
Participants in grades 7-12 will discuss Healthy Youth Survey results from fall 2018.
Sibling Activities: 6-8pm
Participants in grades 6 and under will engage in healthy youth development activities.
